Engine Sludge Problem?

Hi all,

I'm looking into buying a Cupra R soon but wanted to know everyones thoughts on some horror stoies I've seen on the net.

The VAG 1.8t in the VW Passat apparently has an engine sludge issue when incorrect oil is used or the required oil change millage is exceded. However I've read this still may not save them.

I would like to know, if anyone is aware of it, why this problem seems more specific to Passats and not the whole 1.8t range, whats different in say the Cupra R. Also are there any signs to look out for when viewing the cars.

Cheers.

Not known of any sludge problems in the LCR?? There good reliable cars in my eyes!! People on here wouldn't let there cars go over the service schedule which is 10'000 miles i believe? but most on here like me change there oil every 6000 miles anyway, and always use the correct 5w-30 motor oil

There seem to be many accounts of passats with this problem however only example I've found of anything like it on a leon was here:

passionford.com/forum/general-discussion/175159-i-need-legal-advice-re-the-engine-going-in-the-leon.html

(Sorry can't use links as im a newbie on here)

From what I understand this is mostly a problem in the US however the only reason i started looking into it is because the father-in-law had a standard UK passat and this problem knackered his engine.

He's had to settle for a Laguna now, I don't want that kind of fate!
