Engine Rebuild on '02 20VT?

Hi - I'm new here, but will hopefully be able to pick up some useful info from some more experienced heads...

Short story - bought my wife an 02 20VT Cupra back in August - 40k service at SEAT main dealer in December and then in Jan we had what turned out to be a major problem.

The car lost power and this is from the engineers report that has been carried out:

"we noted that one of the exhaust valves in number 4 combustion chamber had a section burnt away. All the other exhaust valves showed signs of running hot with the carbon deposits being light in colour, thin and burnt hard on.

All remaining areas of the cylinder head appeared to be in a serviceable condition with no other further damage or defects noted. "

"CONCLUSION. We can confirm that one exhaust valve in the number 4 cylinder was burnt and this would result in the engine running roughly and poorly in service use. We can only conclude that the valve burning was the result of poor valve seating due to deterioration of the seating faces, carbon contamination, or alterations in air fuel mixture / leaks. "

"We were informed that the repairers are wishing to fit a replacement engine, however at this stage their was no evidence to confirm an engine replacement was the best repair option for the condition found and specialist head reconditioned should be considered as a more economical repair method. We would recommend all the valves are re-seated and the timing belt should not be reused as good engineering practice, the tensioners and idlers should also be considered for replacements."

The Seat Garage have said that we need to replace the engine and have quoted £3600.. I have a warranty from the garage we purchased from but that covers £1000 and Lookers (Garage purchased from) have been so slack in getting this sorted that I paid for the inspection myself.

I did have a look under known faults, but couldn't find anything similar in the pages I scanned.

I've spoken to SEAT customer services as the car has only covered 43k and has always been serviced with them - their response so far has been less than encouraging, although they would have only just received the report..

..and I only just replaced the cam belt!!

Thanks for reading, if anyone has any advice, that would be great. I'm currently in negotiation with Lookers to get this sorted..

Cheers

SOunds like it's run lean & melted a valve

assuming none of the bits have gouged up your block, you might just need new valves, and a belt

walk away from your SEAT Dealer, they're of no use to you now - find a knowledgeable VAG specialist nearby you & they hsould come in under budget.

Agreed with m0rk. Stealers are dreadful for value for money and the service they provide. Ask anyone here thats been to a decent independent or specialist and they will all say the same...sod the dealer!

Where abouts do you live so we can point in the right direction.

Have you contacted the CAB to see if anything can be done about getting all of the repairs being covered by the origianl selling garage?

Thanks M0rk - much appreciated.

The thing that annoys me - apart from it taking so long, is that the Seat dealer quoted over £3500 for a new engine, and Seat customer service don't seem to have heard of trying to help their customers out..

Now I just need to persuade the missus that it needs that re-map...

Nathanio - we're in Cornwall and the selling garage is in Essex. I sent the report to the selling garage earlier and have given them till Thursday to get me an answer on the repair - if you can recommend someone down my way, that would be great.

Thanks again guys - it's reassuring to know their are people out there willing to lend some advice

Cheers

write to 'whatcar? helpline' and see if you can get them involved. Worth a go especially as it has a seat service history. They will take up the negotiation for you and print your story. You find manufacturers don't like to be seen as unhelpful in real bad luck stories like these.
