Engine oil for 2.0TDI (2015 Leon)

Hi all,

I own a 2015 Leon estate (2.0TDI)

It sufferers with the known oil burn fault of the engine so I do have to top it up every now and again.

The garage I take my car to is a VW specialist and they put in Shell Helix 0W-30

I’ve always purchased Castrol Edge 5W-30

Both the Shell and Castrol oils show in the compatibility tools from Halfords and Euro car parts

Is it an issue mixing two different oils like this? And which one is the correct one to use?

Cheers,

Sam

Hi,
How much oil do you burn? how many miles do you go - per litre of oil you put in?
As long as the oil is 507 approved either will be fine. The 0w30 is the newer version.

I've recently changed my mind on oils - previously only buying the premium ones.
The VAG 507 is a tough oil standard to meet. VW share a list of oils which are approved - last oil I used was Manoil 507 which is cheap - and officially approved by VW to 507 spec and is in their list.
If this cheaper oil meets the required spec - why spend more!?
There is a difference to approved - and equivalent to.
Equivalent to is just marketing speak for we think it should be ok.
To say approved - it has to be actually tested and approved against the specification.

Ahh got you okay

I'm well within their crazy 1L/1000km

I do approx 10,000 miles a year and a 4L bottle of oil lasts around that

I didn't know they had a list - would explain why the garage use that

Its roughly £50 a year I'm spending on oil (excluding servicing) so fortunately not a crazy amount at the moment!

If they're both fully synthetic and meet the correct VW specification, a little mixing won't do any damage.

Their allowance is actually 0.5L /1000km - which is the same as 0.5L /620 miles or 1L /1240miles.

Looks like you're at around 1L /2500miles so around 0.25L /1000km which is half the usage that VW say is the maximum.

FYI; I keep a log of any oil I add and the mileages - and over the last few years i'm averaging about 0.16L /1000km.

I might start doing the same, good to know I'm not at the limit then!

Years ago I had a Mazda 6. Used the approved Ford/Mazda oil and never had an issue. Changed to a different brand of oil and within a year the car was using oil.

My entire family has had Seat cars for years. Four Leons, three Ibizas, an Ateca and also just said goodbye to a Toledo. Never put anything other than VW approved oil in them and no oil usage issues with any of them. Rather than ask if it's ok to use a non-approved oil it's better to ask why the heck you'd want to? The correct VW oil is not the cheapest oil on the market but it's not overly expensive either. I buy stuff in bulk from my local dealer and usually get a discount. That way you 100% know it's the right oil and in my book that's worth an extra tenner once a year.

The OP hasn't asked about using a non-approved oil!
Both will be 507 approval which is the VAG required specification of oil.
As long as the oil is approved to 507 there will be no issue.

Mine was much the same and recently I had my injector seals and the rocker cover replaced due to an oil leak. That seems to have helped reduce the increased oil consumption. I deffo top up less than I was before. It does use some oil but not an excessive amount.

I've been using Quartz INEO Long Life 5W30 (507) for the last 2 or 3 years and it seems to like it. I do replace my oil every 5,000 miles (in between normal garage servicing) as I think it helps. Currently on 144,000 miles.
