Just engraved on a smooth plaque on the block. Imagine looking at the engine from the output shaft end, the gearbox joint face is roughly circular and the number is at about 11 o'clock. The number is engraved along the line of the engine-gearbox joint, which could be thought of as underlining the code.

it should also be listed with the serial number on the registration document

it will be 3 letters followed by 6 numbers

e.g. AHU 123456

if you life the engine cover slightly on the drivers side and look on top of the timing belt cover there might still be a small white bar code label with it written along the bottom but dont wipe it as they have a habit of smudging

looking in the pic you posted just under the oil cap there is a groove in the middle of the engine cover follow that to the left (looking from front) it under that edge - easier of the cover is off as you can also get to the block stamping one as well

i'm guessing you havent got the current logbook/reg document as it is also written in full on there

assuming it's currently a UK car alternatively if you can PM or email me the registration i can tell you what chassis/engine number details are written on the reg document vehicle wise if you get stuck.

Guide to finding the engine number, TDI engine

The only certain way is to look at the number stamped on the block. This is pretty difficult to fake and will tell you the engine type and serial number

Looking from the nearside of the open bonnet, the engine number is difficult to see, under the engine cover and a lot of water hoses.

Here it is in close-up, but still in the shadow of all that pipework.

Brightening the image shows up part of the number

Finally, the number is also printed on a sticker stuck on the timimg belt cover. Here you can just see the edge of mine, sticking out from under the engine cover. This is looking from the offside of the bonnet.

The chassis number is part of the VIN number, visible on the scuttle under a (supposedly) transparent panel in the water tray moulding, through the windscreen on the passenger side (should be easy to read here), and the data sticker in the boot, under the carpet on the nearside.

The first part of the data sticker should look a bit like this (explanations on the right)

Code:
G131 24-1 591210 EG		Type
VSS ZZZ 1M Z 2B010626		Chassis number 2B010626
1M28        24			1M2=Toledo 28 24 is the complete model code
TOLEDO TDI 8 SIGNA
81 MNO       C5M		81 KW = engine power
ASV EGS Engine code and Transmission code
LS5N ---- ---- KU Paint No and interior

Decoding the VIN number

Code:
VSS ZZZ 1M Z 2B012345
||| ||| || | ||||||||
||| ||| || | ||++++++-Production sequence number (i.e. chassis number)
||| ||| || | |+-------Manufacturing plant (B Brussels, Belgium)
||| ||| || | +--------Model Year - 2 2002
||| ||| || +----------Check digit - Z, filler
||| ||| |+------------Engine
||| ||| +-------------Body Style
||| +++---------------Vehicle Attributes - ZZZ, filler
+++-------------------Origin: V Europe,VS Spain, VSS SEAT

The chassis number is eight characters. The last six are the serial number. The first one (could be a letter or a number) is the model year, pretty much the year of manufacture. The second character is a letter code for the location of the manufacturing plant. My Toledo was made in Brussels so has B here. The SEAT plant in Martorell is R, and V is the ex-VAG-Ford Portuguese plant in Palmela where the Alhambra/Sharan/Galaxy models were made. VAG bought out the Ford half to improve the production quality, and since the termination of the Galaxy joint venture the Eos is produced here.
