Engine Momentarily Dropping Revs/Stalling

Hi All,

First post here, although I have had a good search around to no avail.

I'm driving a 2003 Leon Mk1 1.6S and for the past month I have noticed an intermittent issue. It occurs perhaps once every 300-400 miles on average.

I will be driving along at 3000-4000rpm and the engine will lose power for a split second and then resume. The dial will drop to 2000-3000rpm and then go back to where it was. It throws me forward a bit and is then fine. You can feel the loss in power, which isn't a fun feeling.

This always happens when the engine is warm (but all my journeys are long enough to ensure the engine is warm, but it has never happened cold so far). I am usually holding a speed or gradually accelerating, never making sudden changes in speed.

No lights are illuminated on the dashboard as a result of this.

However, the really unusual one occurred today - I was stopped in traffic for a couple of minutes and suddenly the engine had stopped. I was idling at around 600rpm beforehand, so I could only assume it was a similar drop in power which took it below the stall speed and it cut-out. I started up again and it was fine.

A brief bit of recent history on this car:

12 months ago - Starter motor was replaced and I believe the battery was too.

6 months ago - MOT and service. Cambelt etc were changed. I had an issue with the garage as they mucked up the timing, so the engine would cut-out in traffic and was running harshly and bucking around. The gear stick had a lot of vibration going through it (it's better now but you can still feel something). This was fixed by a different garage and seemed to work okay. There had been a light on the dash for quite some time (it always passed the MOT and services and was largely ignored) so they replaced the Lambda sensor to correct this.

6 months to present - Sometimes the EPC and engine light come on. I can't remember the specific OBD2 code which I read off my phone and a bluetooth device. I could induce this error on quite a regular basis by driving for about 10 minutes from cold, stopping (usually at a shop) and then driving 10 more minutes and the lights would flash up mid-travel. When you restart the engine after finishing the drive, just the engine light stays on. After a day or two, that light go off from my dash. I believe the error code was to do with the airflow meter, although the code could also mean Lambda/EGR?

I originally thought it may be a short somewhere, but it doesn't tend to drop revs on bumps and today it cut-out stationary, so a short seems less likely unless it's something very close to the moving parts. Possibly a bad earth in the system?

I'd appreciate some input on this!

Many thanks.

Well I have had some more misfortune followed by a bit of luck (followed by more misfortune).

I was pulling out onto a 50mph dual carriageway and going up through the gears and the engine just gave out. It went into a feeble state and then just completely gave out. I pulled out, started up again and it went for another few metres before the engine cut out. I started it up again and finally got going so I could make it home just a few miles away.

I took the engine cover off and checked all the electrical leads I could see in the engine bay. Everything looks adequate and the earth connections I can see look fine. The battery itself had not become detached either. The throttle body isn't caked up either... A bit of dirt but nothing that makes me thing it needs an urgent clean.

I then got onto what I believe are the fuel injectors... There's the throttle body and next to it is a metal set of pipes which go into the engine, then 4 electrical components each with two leads attached. 3 of them have a purple clip which connects to the power lead. 1 of them has a yellow clip instead.

The one with the yellow clip (second cylinder from the left as you're looking into the engine bay from the front) has a really loose connector. In fact, the metal pins inside the injector are too big for the clip, and therefore, there is no solid connection. There are also no plastic tangs securing it in place! You can just push it and the plug will fall out. For now, I have been able to secure it all in place with a cable tie just to get it into a garage, but I think that's all the issue really is.

Any idea what the correct part number is for this, and can I find out what the wrong (yellow) one is? All the connectors are damaged, presumably from services etc over the years, but at least they are all in position and fixed firmly there.

So I replaced injector 2 with a new one of the correct type.

All seemed to be going well but on my drive home from work, the engine cut out again as I was going at 5-10mph. It also studdered and lurched about 3 or 4 times whilst driving along, either idle throttle or light acceleration in 2nd or 3rd gear.

I have done a lot of searching, but nothing quite matches this?
