Yesterday, I started the car, but my hand slipped off the key and it clearly ddin't fully turn over. 2nd time it turned over fine, but took a bit of accelerator to start.

Then as I drove off, the EPC light came on and the engine diagnostics light. Car seems to be running ok, but as I was on a 30 mile drive to work, turned around and took the GFs Focus.

(SEATs are better than Focus BTW)

Anyway, EPC light now off, but Engine diagnostics light still on.

Anyone have any ideas at all? Not sure whether it is safe to drive. If anyone in Mansfield area wants to hook up VAG.COM, might be an idea, though I don't have it.

Any help much appreciated - car is Mk4 2.0 Sport 8V on 03 plate. 1st ever problem.

PS I will be out for a few hours, so if anyone posts, don't think I'm being an ungrateful git by not replying straight away.

Apparently sometimes these are caused by temporary glitches and the light will go out after 6 or 7 restarts of the car if it detects the 'problem' no longer exists. Otherwise I would recommend you get a VAGCOM cable and even use the shareware software, It will allow you to scan and reset codes manually. It may prove useful in the future.. there is nothing worse than not knowing what is causing the problem!

For just ENGINE, AUTO TRANS, SRS and ABS system code reading, Gendan sell a "light weight" code reader for all VAG cars including later CAN modules, it about £40 delivered, I've got one for the glovebox, but also use VAG-COM or its newest version VCDS. The Gendan self contained reader is neater to use than VAG-COM but less useful for "heavy weight" fault finding - maybe its only "light weight" code reading and clearing you need. Unfortunately this code logging will tend to happen if you accidentally "mess up" the starting - by the way, you will be able to retrieve the fault code(s) even although the lights have all gone out. Sometimes its better to actually read and clear these fault codes rather than just leave them to "cloud the issue" when and if the next problem appears.
