Hi Guys,

Just brought myself a Leon cupra tdi 150 42k on it, and im well impressed with it! Just one thing bugging me, i drove nearly 300 miles at the weekend and when in trafffic on the motorway not once did the rad fans kick in, the temperature doesnt budge from halfway at 90oc but just kinda worried as it really was starting to smell very very hot!!! Now i opened the bonnet yesterday and noticed that on top of the rad there is part of a wiring loom the runs right along the top with a 2 pin plug halfway along it, its disconnected. Is this why they are not working? i wasnt sure if to connect it or not or it should be disconnected for a reason. Anyone help? If pictures are needed i can take some.

Rich.

i find with mine it depends how hot you have your heaters on, my fans come on dramatically less with a/c on hot than a/c on cold.

that connector not connected cant be good tho

Does your aircon work OK ? With the engine warm, the aircon on and the centre of the compressor wheel visibly turning you should have both fans spinning - maybe slow, maybe fast. If they are not spinning it could be your fan controller which is located under the battery tray and accessible from under the car (once you remove the turbo hose). It has 2 connectors to it, one with thicker wires than the other (£100 from Seat, I got a pattern one that I didn't use in the end but much cheaper).

The 2-pin across the top might be to the external temp sensor - not sure to be honest. Pics would help though. Could really do with ruling that out. A dealership mechanic would tell you in an instant if you just drove upto the workshop doors and asked.

My aircon was not working recently and it turned out to be a wiring issue caused by a cable to that controller rubbing through on a water hose clip near to the controller. It stopped my aircon working though. Certainly worth checking the wiring in that area - again you can see it from under the car with that same turbo hose off (passenger side, going into the intercooler). Its something of a known issue apparently, but I'd never heard of it.

On my TDI 110 that connector goes to the bonnet catch. There is a switch that is part of the catch telling the car when the bonnet has been opened. On my car it is connected.

I reckon that's all it is - bonnet catch switch. The question is though........ why was it disconnected ? Maybe it kept shorting out or something and tripping the alarm ??? Prob nothing serious though.
