Hi All,

New member and not sure if I have posted in right place.

Its my daughters car 2003 Seat Ibiza 1.4 se, the engine management light has just come on (stays on). Car drives ok and turns over on the key.

Is their a way of reading fault codes without dealers lap top?

If not is their any common faults.

I myself not mechanical minded so please explain in lay mans terms

Thanks in advance

I reposted in Mk4.

North West London area.

I take it you have to use dealers PC to read any fault codes.

But from your experience is their any common faults which bring this light on.

no if you purchase a lead off of ebay mate, you can vagcom it yourself and clear codes :) thats what ive done!

as for common faults, i think it could just be pure guesses without vagcom im afraid

if you scroll down on the forum index page, find the vagcom section, and put up a post in there, if theres someone in your area, they may come and run vagcom on it for you :)

Clear the codes yourself with a lead, would you be able to post the link sparkie1984.

I think it may have to go to local independant garage i know, she needs the car for a long run this Friday and a bit worried the EML might be something serious.

Thanks for all the quick replys

normally if you post in the vagcom section if theres someone local they might offer to pop up and vag com it for you, like in another post on here where mr d offered to pop up and check it for another guy.

always worth an ask mate :) someone might pop round and check it over for you

sorry for spelling errors as said in and out.

Sparkie1984 the car is running fine so from your experience what is the most likely fault.

I think we will try and book into garage tomorrow.

Again thanks

http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_GDVAG.html maybe have a look at this self contained tool, its less than £40 and covers all VAG car up to present day. Anyone offering to tell you what the fault code would be would only be guessing - and that is not very helpful. VAG-COM VCDS as its now called is overkill unless you are going to use it a lot and to "change" things. I've got VCDS and then in have in the car I've bought the Gendan one - its just as handy for general fault code reading on ENGINE +AUTO TRANS + SRS + ABS, one thing though, if you buy it you should search the internet to find a better list of VAG codes than the one that is provided with the tool. Just one other thing, if the car logs a fault, then the fault disappears, the warning light will stay on for some thing like 6 or 7 engine starts. Logged faults can list from cam timing even if you have none on that engine to ignition coils, Exhaust Gas Recycling valve and Lambda probes - and lots more - maybe around 2000 codes for engine only!

Ok thanks for all the info.

I know with some cars you can get codes up without any special tools/leads.

Well the snow meant the car stayed on the drive today, rang garage to book it in and no answer so it seems once again the UK comes to a stand still.

Still managed to build a 6ft snowman today with the kids.
