Elsbett Veggy Oil conversion kits for PD engines

They do a 2-tank self-installation kit for the Ibiza PD 130 (and lots of others too).

Price is quoted at €870 euro, which seems to include 16% German VAT, and P&P.
That's just under £600.



Wonder how much I can get hold of veggy oil for (in decent quantities) - and whether it's be worth it ?

Have a look at your local cash and carry. Or call up one of the suppliers to the catering trade. I would pass on some names, but you're a bit far away so no real point.

Any ideas on a ball-park figure ?
Given that Morrissons sell it at 44p litre, I'm guessing it would be a fair bit cheaper from a cash'n'carry.

We got a couple of 25l drums from there the other day, so I'll check the bill when I get to work later.

Just doing some rough sums; at my annual mileage, at Morrissons prices & guessing a 10% drop in MPG, I'd still save over £1000 a year. Obviously I'd pay some duty

But that's some saving when the kit costs around £600.

I would lose some boot space though.

Just check our prices and we paid 45.45p a litre. We did try the cheaper stuff from Tescos, but it wasn't as good for frying for some reason. Wonder where I can get a decent filter from for our used oil....

when running on veggie oil, do they still give off black smoke?

Not sure, I would expect so, perhaps depends on the type of oil and the ECU mapping...

Makro do 25l drums of veggie oil for £10 I think, last time I looked. I won't be using it in my car though. Mate is investing in some bio-diesel making stuff, so might look into that.

Not so sure about this as in germany engines have failed using biodiesel.

they say used chip fat oil is the best if you can filter the bits out of it, if you go begging you might get it free when the chippers close at night

If its not as efficent it can't be making the same amount of grunt?

I believe it is a grey colour and smells like you have chips frying

Actually I'm not sure if there is a power loss, and if anything the cetane rating is increased depending on which type of oil used.

If it's going to save me a small fortune in fuel then I could cope with losing a few bhp

Niall -> This is to use straight veg oil, heated so it's at the right viscosity, not biodiesel. And Elsbett warrant your engine too

Micky -> Used oil is OK if you're processing it to make biodiesel, as you'll be cleaning it quite thoroughly. I wouldn't use filtered waste oil though, as it contains water and other nasties from the fryer. These kits are for pure new oil - OK maybe not as cheap, but it means you don't have to build your own BD processing plant and spend hours in the garage making it...

There's an interesting article on the website of Angel Tuning about biodiesel. They ran an Alfa on it, and found that the engine performs better - more power, less smoke, and smoother. The only drawback was a slight loss of mpg, but they make the point that it might have been due to them putting the car through its paces during the experiment.

The problem with making your own biodiesel from WVO is the time, space, mess, chemicals and effort involved.
Although BD from WVO is the cheapest ultimately, the Elsbett SVO kit means you just pour in new oil at around 40p/litre and off you go...

It'll give new meaning to the word "chipped" LOL
