ECU Problem

Hi Guys, I have had a problem with my mark I Leon FR TDI, One minute it was fine and pulled up went in a shop for 5mins, when i returned it would not start. The car was trying to turn over, earlier indications and fault codes say it was on the fuel system but after a few weeks of baffleing a mechanic i took it to Seat where it has been today and after 3 hours of fault finding they have pointed the problem at the ECU.
As you can imagine I have been given a price to replace the ECU from seat but i was just wondering if anyone has had anything like this before? the Seat mechanic has never come across this problem before. Do i have any other options, i.e. can the ECU have new codes loaded to it? would it be difficult to track down a second hand ECU? Any info would be very much appreciated, Thanks.

I guess you mean a Mk2 as you put this post in the Mk2 section?

Did they check all the relays under the bonnet , in the fuse box next to the battery. Has been reported before with dealers saying it needs a new ECU only to discover its a relay in the fuse box that costs about a fiver.

There are company's that offer refurbished ECU's - if your car was std.?? - just google it @ a much more realistic price too. You will also need to get your key fob done I assume [ ECU has security code generator I think, but the refurb company should be able to assist]

Have collected the Leon from Seat today and weirdly the performance seems to be back in the car even though i have been told i need the new ecu, the engine management light still on and the car is still kicking out black smoke at times. Can the ecu be tempremental? explaining why the performance is back or would this be because of seat maybe correcting some of the problems whilst fault finding?
Also on the diagnostic it says "Engine ecu earthing out on anti run on valve causing valve to to shut and engine to stall or start" Does this mean anything to anyone?
