Ecomotive Diesel Particulate Filter Warning Light

Hi there,

I picked up my new Seat Ibiza Ecomative 2 weeks ago and have done 500 miles, some motorway (30%) but also fair amount of city driving(70%). The Diesel particulate filter warning light came on the day before yesterday so I followed instructions and did the 15min run at 60mph as suggested in the manual to clear it. After 3 more short town journeys the light has come on again, it did go off after 7min driving at 60mph.

Is anyone else having this problem? Having bought this car for environmental and economic reasons it is going to be counterbalanced by having to drive 15 miles out of my way this frequently.

Thanks, David

In my opinion the DPF is a load of crap, it blocks up with muck and then you need to drive the car hard to blow the muck out of the tail pipe

No difference to just blowing it out of the tail pipe in the normal way

I had a company car that they weren't going to put through the MOT and was changing to a car allowance at that point. I would have waited for the Mk 5 if it wasn't for the time constraint.

Will get some photos up shortly.

As said - the light only comes on when the system needs a clear out. Basically the particule filter builds up all the crap in the exhaust and then when the exhaust gets hot enough it burns it all off. So if you're doing a lot of short trips without getting engine temp up to running temp then this could be why it's doing it.

The DPF's are also a pain in the arse when you come to remapping....not that you probably will but with the Leon FR's and Altea FR's for example....there has been rumour of the exhaust system setting on fire due to a remap with a DPF in place.

To be honest if the new diesels all have the DPF's on then I'm gonna stick with these ones.

My parents have an Altea FR 170 tdi. On the exhuast there is a catalyst, DPF, silencer......too much damn crap! Basically! They can only get 40ish average on their car pretty much all the time. I can get high 50's easy.

Parents Altea Road tax: £165 - with particule filter/cat/silencer
My Ibiza road tax £115 - with no cat and one tiny silencer - who says it goes on emissions. ;)

I haven't heard anything about that, have you got a link to a thread/site where this has happened?

Winspurd, pop into seat and ask them for a copy of the DPF leaflet, it will clear up all the queries you may have and teach you how you need to drive the car to clear the filter.

One fact is that a mk2 leon FR TDI on here had a burning smell for a day or 2 after a remap but then again some mk2 FR170 TDI's have had the same smell without a remap

One rumour is that a car with a 170 TDI had flames from the engine bay after a remap but like I say I think it is just a rumour unless anyone knows different

Here is the burning smell thread, see post 27>>>>http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=164192&highlight=remap+smell

Good stuff, I think it's important that we all stick to facts. Don't want my residuals effected by rumour :D

Thanks for all the input, have been away on holiday this week so not able to get involved.

After a couple of good runs I've had no more DPF warning lights come up but I'll have to see what happens if I don't manage to get a decent run in a 2-3 week period.

Thanks to Mt cellophane as I didn't know there was a specific leaflet on the DPF so I'll give Seat a call.

ive had an ecomotive 1.4 diesel with DPF for 3 yrs,and it will be as you described.i have to REGENERATE mine 3-4 times a month.Defeats the purpose of trying to save fuel, environment etc, when you have to take the car out on a long run to regenerate the DPF and reset the warning light on your dash,on a journey that was not plannedAfter buying the car i was told it was DPF (never heard of it) and having had the car into seat for reset, been told that the DPF is not under the new cars 3 year warranty.Be warned, new DPF filter replacement costs approx £1800.

I also have an ecomotive 1.4 diesel with DPF for 2.7 yrs,and it will be as you described.I have to REGENERATE mine 3-4 times a month. Do a lot of city driving. Has been collected by dealer 4 times under warrenty. First time EMC light on they advised to carry on untill they had space to service, ended up 2 weeks plus a new DPF, tried to say it was my fault be they eventually did cover it. Warranty runs out in November. No mention of DPF regen when we bought it. Really regret buying it, would love money back! Seat should not be allowed to get away with this, but as individuals we will never win. SDounds from you guys will have to get DPF removed Carefully

I simply removed my DPF , the car behaves much better, responds quicker to pedal and I don't have an headache when it comes to maintanance...
