Drum to Disc Conversion

Going by etos & visual inspection it seems it could be very possible.

Now I can get my hands on Rear Caliper's & Carrier's.

Also I assume I need:

Handbrake Cables
Rear Brake Hoses

Pad's & Disk's also, But that isn't a problem.

Now I know my Ibiza is only a 1.2, But with the new wheels drum brakes look awful to say the least.

Anyone think I'm over seeing any major problems or issues?

Much appreciated

i think you need a complete new rear axle to make that conversion. It has been done before but it is alot of work.

I get the impression the Rear axle & the wheel bearings/hubs are the same. The rear axle even has the tabs ready for Disc Brake calipers...

You don't need the full axle, but you do need to change the hubs and wheel bearings too.
Also need disc backing plates.

Just not worth the effort

Hmm, Techie did this mod on the Fabia, maybe they have slightly different axles even though they are the same chassis. Anyway, to the OP, its really not worth it, my car has all round disk brakes and tbh its not necessary on a car that only has 100hp never mind the 70hp that the 1.2 has.

Yeh and he changed the axle because it's the easiest way to do it. It's not necessary tho.
The hubs are necessary. The bearings aren't strictly, but anyone who splits the hubs and doesn't change the bearing is nuts

What wheels have you got on? They might not look too bad if you paint them with hammerite.

I'm not expecting performance Benefits, Its just mainly for looks as my new wheels look pants with drums.

I work in the trade, So cost wise its costing me next to nothing! Just thought I would ask as there's no harm in asking right?

Hammerite option is a maybe.

Hammerite that bad boy!! i did that to my mk4 fiesta (burple rust wagon) and the difference it made was amazing and it only cost me a fiver and a sunny days worth of TLC to my car ;)

but if your on a budget it still looks better than rust! silver or black are most likely the best colour choices tho i went for silver it made a huge difference....made it look shiney and new.....shame the rest of the car didnt :cartman:

they'd be better if not drilled! just looks stupid if fronts aren't same pattern lmao

but drums black or silver would look much better, don't do drums a colour!

Can I suggest, as on a similar thread, the use of Hermetite heat-dispersant paint, a matt or satin black would fade the drums into the background. I'm not on commission, BTW!

Yeah its possible to turn those Land Rover drums to shiney discs. Did this on my old 85ps before i got my 100ps model.

You will have plenty of fun doing the conversion tho.

I dont know if the 1.2s have the ABS recievers working on the back drums, so you might need to look at getting 2xABS modules for each back wheel. If you dont have ABS in your car then you may have a problem, but i think even the 1.2 models have ABS!?

You will also need new hubs as well since i belive the carriers are part of the hubs, so add them to your shopping cart (they retail new at something like £95 per hub).

Disc shields if you look at it can be optional but it is highly recommended that you get these too. Good luck..

Then he will need plenty of money to do the conversion.

If you are getting the parts new from vag specialists or avs parts then expect between £300 and £400. Then i would highly recommend that a garage does the conversion, so add a couple of hours labour x £65.

Then you need to amplify the issue that you are messing with the key compents of a vehicle, that if you get wrong, then you will crash and injure yourself or be killed. I was lucky myself as i got most of the stuff from eBay, and had someone help me fit the parts as they have assembled/disassembled cars for 8 years in scrappers.

If you definatly want to go ahead with conversion then pm Techie and he would be able to provide you with the list of parts needed to do it properly. Or alternativly, search for the thread i made and its responses.
