Ok so i've just found out that my car requires a new down pipe for the exhaust system.

I've had a rattle from the front of the exhaust system for the past few days so with a day off today i took the ibiza down to my local National where they do a free exhaust check.
After a few bangs of the cat and visual inspection plus a few revs of the engine i was told the fault.

Now there is NO part available through any source apart from SEAT themselves or i go custom (i.e full system they recommended).
A quick ring to my local dealer and i was told that specific pipe which includes the cat (as they are not individual) will cost me £465.73 inc vat without fitting. Agreed and swiftly hungup.

Questions are am i being taken for a ride or do i need a second opinion other than National them selves and have other members had similar problems as the search doesn't seem to answer my questions??

Sorry about rant

Did National say what exactly is wrong with the downpipe?

I was once quoted £330 for a cat for my old Peugeot 306, that price was from Kwik fit!

If there is only something wrong with the downpipe and not the cat, I don't see why you couldn't have a custom downpipe made and then welded to your existing cat.

I know companies like Milltek manufacture a sports downpipe and cat for your car, however they are quite pricey.

Another option is to try and find a second hand downpipe and cat. Plently of people on here upgrade theirs and normall sell the standard systems. Have a look in the Accessories for sale section.

Another common problem that might be causing the rattling are loose turbo mounting bolts. If it is that then they just need tightend up.

No real reason but i did see for myself as i was there.

I don't use the car hardly due to work but when i do its usually once/twice a week for short journeys no more then a few miles. With condesation that builds in the down pipe it doesn't dry out enough hence why it rusts through/makes it rattle when being used for short journeys.

I was told the cat is fine but due to me being a novice about full exhaust systems i know a cat back will not solve my problem as i need a down pipe.

Seat told me they are the one whole piece can you remove just the dowpipe and then bolt on/weld a used/new one to the original cat or does that impose its own complications?

You could probably weld something together. I just had a look at my spare one and it has a short metal downpipe which goes into a flexible part then another short bit which then turns into the cat. So you would proabbly have to cut it where the downpipe turns into the flexible part.

Let me know if you are interested in buying mine...I just haven't got round to putting it in the for sale section yet. It's done 25k miles.

cheers for that. Can i ask what you replaced it with and a possible link to look at it (was it a system that included the downpipe/cat and from the cat back)?
How much would you be looking @ for both items.

thanks

I had the cat back replaced a few months back with a Milltek cat-back, then had the downpipe and cat replaced with the Milltek part a couple of weeks ago. I sold the cat back soon after removing it but have the downpipe and cat, and haven't got round to putting it up for sale yet.

Here's a pic I just took. It comes with the shield attached to the cat and doesn't look like any of it comes apart. Has done just 25k miles.

Should be fairly easy to replace. All you need is a new gasket and possibly a set of bolts (about £5). Was looking for £100 for it.

Thanks for that. Just posted on DPM to see what they can do for me, just got the problem of fitting it somewhere. I will bear you in mind though, would of thought the new year will be when i get the problem sorted, just won't drive it much unless i have too.

I was thinking that, quite a few of the Mk4 Cupras have had this problem (mine included). I would just double check the turbo bolts are tight before going ahead and changing the down pipe.

i only paid £400 for my turbo back, decat, non-res system! from Awesome IIRC.
thinking about it, i suppose the price difference is that you need their sports cat for a petrol, but i didn't think it was £300 more than the de-cat downpipe which cost circa £130 -150.

Yeah a full system seems quite high, but i cant understand that a Mitek system will not come cheap.

These turbo bolts seem quite intresting so will have a look at them. Are they only accessible from underneath the car? and what am i looking exactly?

Thanks.

Milltek cat back is about £350-£400 and the downpipe and cat about £400-£450. You can get to the bolts under the bonnet, but they are quite fiddly. You can see one at the back of the engine, just behind it. If you can get your fingers in there, you might be able to feel it's loose (try this when the engine has called down tho lol)

You can see it here, just below the number 4:
