Does lagging make an exhaust quieter?

Just wanting to know if lagging an exhaust makes it any quieter?

I'm trying to make the exhaust on my MK2 toledo a bit quieter on startup, because they're not the quietest, and I start work really early in the morning ;)

Most of the noise seems to be coming from underneath the car, so I was thinking of lagging it from the downpipe all the way along to the backbox.

Would this help?

Also, would it be OK to wrap the CAT? Or will it catch fire? I know CATs are really hot by nature (Have seen them glowing before)

Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers!!

lagging keeps the heat in, so it won't be any use to you - not sure what else to suggest though?

There shouldnt be much sound coming from underneath the car unless its blowing somewhere ?
Also to buy enough lagging to do a full exhaust from downpipe back would be expensive, probably cheaper to have a less noisy back box made!

Whay are the Golf MK IV platform cars so noisy on startup? I've heard it's the secondary air pump, but I'm unsure whether mine has one or not. I certainly can't see one under the bonnet.

It's actually been back to kwik fit an few days ago (exhaust under warranty from previous owner ) because the joint were leaking. Turns out the exhaust had the wrong size clamps on it which had crushed the pipe, rather than clamping it. They took it apart and put a shed load of assembly paste in the joints and put it back together. It doesn't seem to have made much difference though..

Hmmm there be your problem then i think my friend or atleast part of it.
Take it back and get them to replace it again if they cant fix it. If you tell them you can smell exhaust fumes in the car then its dangerous and they have to do something about it.
Only if you can smell fumes in the car ofcourse ;)

I might well do that Dan. The weird thing is, the exhaust isn't actually leaking. If I blocked the tail pipes off before, I could see the gas escaping. I can't now, but it's still loud on a cold start. Quitens down after a couple of minutes though, and then it's fine.

Myabe it's just a characteristic of these cars, and something I'll have to live with. That is, if I can't get any joy from kwik fit of course ;)
