My MPG display is giving really sporadic readings. Basically when going at a steady speed with just a very slight throttle adjustment it will flicker from 100mpg to as low as 0.00 :S Is this normal? Even when just mainting the same speed, amount of throttle it flickers up and down really rapidly and only settles at a normal mpg for a few seconds.

My car has been running rough for a while and wondered if this was connected? Also has anyone had their coolant temp sensor replaced and if so what were your symptoms??

Thats a bit harsh, everyone is entitled to ask a question, this a forum for everyone, both beginners and experts. Hardly a welcoming post is it.

He's just got the dash read out's confused, current 'real time' mpg Vs Ave MPG, there is no problem with the car.

But you are right he shouldn't be flamed for asking...

Personally I'd get it checked out at a dealer. Even on the real time MPG display if you're travveling at a constand speed with no throttle input change then it shouldn't vary too much.

If the car is running rough then there could well be somethign wrong that is causeing the flicker. Could be a coil pack maybe.

I think people should maybe read the questions properly before answering too, I mean he's given clues there that all is not right and you still told him it's normal :p

Why moniter that anyway?

Moniter your average MPG but monitering everytime your foot is on the throttle is ludicrous!

Hi, thanks for the replies. I didn't know that there were two different types of reading for the MPG so sorry if it sounded like a daft question. Like I said, my car has been running rough for a while and I thought maybe this would be a clue to something, maybe a fuelling problem.

No offence taken at anyone's reply, thanks for enlightening me folks.

It does seem odd to me if you get a 000 reading on the "instantaneous" mpg reading. I have only ever got numbers above 5 and " - - - "

I only say this as I have tried and tried but I can never get the reading below 5mpg, and that is booting it in 3rd up a motorway "on" ramp......

Sad I know, but I was trying to see if I could get it down to 1mpg with no success. It just seemed to stick at 5.

Yea the current mpg can flicker imensely...As said above to different throttle responces...wind..speed..all sorts. Mine can flicker from 70mpg to 34mpg and go all over the place..but its normal...However., if your car is running rough, it could well have a problem, as i have never seen mine drop to 0mpg, and i do drive the car fairly hard at times.

Might be worth getting it checked mate.
