Do my rear pads need changing? Two mechanics said they do.

Hi all, two things,

Sorry this isn't Mk1 or Leon specific but couldn't see a Maintenance section...

1)

I had my Leon Cupra TDi services in December and the mechanic said I'd need to change my rear pads in about a month.

So I bought some pads (from a website often linked to on here can't remember which, they're OE pads though).

I went up to my mum's so her bf could show me how to change them, but when we compared the new to the old pads they're only half as thick, so presumably only half worn and not needing replacing?

I had an MOT yesterday (which it passed) and was again advised to change the pads as a matter of urgency, then my rear tyres (I know they're almost down to the indicator but have being for months, nice Dunlops).

I've not done many miles since the service, maybe 1000, so they won't be in any a different state.

What do you guys think? Are they just both trying to get extra work or do they actually need doing?

2)
The MOT guy also said my car was a lot louder than his Bora and that I might need to replace my turbo pipes. At least I think that's what he said... How would I check the conidtion of these and does it sound likely?

Thanks.

Yeh, they're as work as on the outside of the discs.

Plus when looking at the new pads they're kinda (hard to say in words) have a lower surface area to start with....
