Do i need a Dump Valve?

Hello Guys

I 've just had my LC a couple of weeks now, and am thinking about perfomance mods. The car is standard apart from being chipped, according to the dealer i got it from.

It feels quick (like being shot out of a catapult kind of quick!) and i love it. Then sometimes, and i don't know if this wet weather has anythiing to do with it, but it feels like all of the power is getting through!
Any ideas? do i need a dump valve? should i change the std filter for a perfomance panel type or do i change to an induction kit???

Any reply would be appriciated.
:)
p.s. a bit skint at the moment cos i just bought the beast and spending most of my dough on petrol!!!!

If it's remapped a new DV is always a good idea. Not for any performance benefit really, more because the standard DV is a known weak spot and may cause problems later on.

Panel filter is also a good idea. If nothing else it makes servicing cheaper and easier as most are re-usable with a good cleaning kit. Nice cheap mod too :)

Induction kit is for noise and suffers from heat soak. If you go for something like a BMC CDA or a Dynatwist you might see 1-2bhp more, but don't expect any more than that.

And with regards to the weather, any turbo car will vary with weather fluctuations. Nice, cool, dense air on a dry cold evening will make it fly. Warm air on a summer day will slow it down. Lifes much more interesting when turbo charged ;)

When I took the old DV of my LCR it fell apart in my hands. I'd defo go for a new one. Forge Motorsport are a good place to start.

Cheers RobM, i'll keep that info in mind.

I've seen a BMC panel filter advertised for about forty quid which i think sounds reasonable and i'm going to order on line today. DV will have to wait a little while as there about £150 (maybe next month).

Would you (or anyone else viewing) recommend getting the car tuned up on a rolling road?

The air-filter topic will require debate as there any a few options, each with benefits and related down-sides.

A replacement high-flow filter, by K+N or Greencotton inside your existing box might be nice. Coupled with a larger CAI would provide nice, cold flow. But you wouldn't get much a noise increase.

An induction kit the expensive option, but be wary of engine heat being inducted. Using a heat-shield or a modified standard airbox to shield the induction from engine warmth is a must. Or, alternatively, run a high-diameter cold-air intake from the grill or lower-bumper. There are various types of induction, they're discussed at length in a good many threads.

In addition to that, there are fitting guides for a few methods of increased air-supplies.

With regards to the DV. The idea reason for having one is to prevent un-used boost from washing back over the turbine, therefore having a slowing effect on its spinning.. and wasting built-up turbine speed. This is bad because boost takes a while to work, i.e. turbo-lag. The DV purges this excess boost when the throtte plate closes when you ease off the pedal.

A decent DV will purge this pressure when needed, with either a recirculating valve.. i.e. one that passes the purged boost back into the turbo.. this has obvious benefits, it keeps the turbine spinning when it would normally be forced to slow. Or, it can make the whoooosh noise :D Compared to a re-circulating DV, the noise is a waste of air.

Cue Forge's new splitter valve, with adjustable crap :D

We sell the Forge 007P re-circ dv's at £72.45+VAT so they dont really brake the bank. It depends if you want the DV for a noise or not. If your just after a noise then an uprated forge re-circ and an induction kit will give the noise. Or Forge are just releasing their "splitter" DV which is both re-circ and blow off. We have 2 here to try, i've had one on my Ibiza for the last few days. Sounds great and no issues with the limp mode or anything of that sort.

For me, performance is priority, and as i only have the LC and not the LCR, I want to make the best of it. Extra noise is not important at the moment, although I'm not opposed to it.

i have also seen a valve kit on e-bay, for manually adjusting the boost and it seems like a very cheap way of getting more power. I used to have something like this on my old 1.3 UNO Turbo and it turned it into an absolute animal. Are there any risks by installin one of these on the more modern Leon Turbo?

Great to hear, Andy. I'm ordering one when I get paid. TODAY. Glad to hear it's had positive effects thus far.
