i was checking the oil this morning and as i pulled the dipstick out anad the tube shattered (i presume where its so cold). a piece about 10mm x 3mm has gone down and i'm now unsure what to do. Is it a case of getting the oil out now without starting the engine as not to cause any damage? if so and it doesnt come out with the oil then what next. last thing i need right now is the thing blowing up on me!

Thanks

if it were me i would drain the oil now to be sure to get it out.
the worst thing that could happen is it may get caught in an oil feed and seize a part of the engine.
having said that it will more than likely just get caught in the filter and you will be ok.....

The tube goes down to the sump so if you want to be safe, drain the oil, remove the sump and the metal bits inside and refit. You will need a new sump gasket though but I am unsure if this was sealant or a specifically made gasket.

note sure mate , but this happened to my mums clio derv , but hers is plastic dipstick so presume it melted in the meantime , where as mine at least is metal , would imagine the internals would chew it up but obviously not goig to do it any good

can you not look at getting a telescopic magnet to reach down there to retrieve it

The dip stick tube is plastic, this happened to me, i found a part in the sump when i changed my oil pick up after about 12 months i didn.t realise anything had fallen in, replacement is about £7 the bit will sit in the sump as it cant get passed the pick up .

PHEW thanks for that, getting the tube now then off to the garage for an oil change.

It's not a gasket, it's just silicone sealant
