Did the usual wonder around DIY stores yesterday....

Came out of focus (about 15 miles from home) and the car sounded a bit funny...then it got worse - eventually sounding like a motorbike... so i pulled over and let it idle while i listened - thats when i heard a sound of metal rattling around....

I risked it by driveing (slowly) home...
turns out the electrode of one plug has dropped out and is now rattling anound in the head....

Will the electrode get chewed up??

Youll be very very very lucky if you get away without damaging anything. If you can hear it getting chewed up then prepare to spend some serious cash.

My personal experience with melting plugs have always ended up in engine rebuilds due to ****ed bores.

A similar thing happened to me with my old 306 DTurbo. Heard a tapping noise, but tried to drive home slowly. One of the injector tips had broken off and fell into the cylinder. It ended up needing a new head, piston, conrod etc etc, and ended up costing oround £1500.

Get it towed to a garage, and don't risk driving it.

It might be worth getting a garage to have a look at it, just to double check.

That way, if it does go kaput, you can always play the "well you said it was ok" card.

I know after things like this happen to me I never enjoy the car in the same way again. Unless I'm sure it's sorted there's always a niggling doubt that something will go when I least expect it.
