DIY a/c recharging...?

Anyone tried one of these to recharge the refridgerant in their air conditioning systems recently? Only started seeing them around in the past couple of months.
Are they any good?
I presume the recharge point is the silver little valve that sticks up above the radiator?

I was always under the impression that air-con gas was seriously nasty stuff, and thats why the dealers did it. Either I was wrongly informed, or something has changed.

id pay the £70ish to get it done properly.. it takes roughly 1 hour to do, as the aircon machine sucks out all the existing gas, creating a vacuum.. this also ensures no damage is done to the existing pipes or radiator etc. then fills it back up again to the correct amount of R134
