how can you tell the difference and what is the difference that gives the extra 20hp. Can the 90hp engine be modified to make it 110hp (without the use of a remap) i.e swapping 90hp injectors for 110hp injectors?

Why not a remap? You'll be able to get more than the 110 and alot cheaper.

Back to the subject:

Difference is basically injectors, turbo, and OE mapping.
The 90 usually comes with a non-vnt turbo (some of the latter models also come with the vnt turbo). The turbo swap + injectors will cost more than the remap.

I suppose that a lot of it depends on whether your car is an early 90bhp model or a later one with the vaiable vane turbo.
I had uprated injector nozzles put in my old 90bhp Ibiza TDI, they gave a better push further up the rev range than my original nozzles, and made the car more powerful without a doubt BUT you would get a far more noticeable increase with a re-map.
Is your concern due to insurance issues?

It was quite a while ago I did my research any modifications now and things have moved on a hell of a lot, but if you have a look on fredsTDI club. There used to be plenty of info on the subject as all the Yanks used to have was the 90bhp model and had to use as many methods as they could to get power out of it, hence lots of ideas and mixtures of different modifications.

You would be looking at between 20 and 25 bhp, may not sound an awful lot but it will bring the car alive. You could combine the new re-map with 110 injectors and get perhaps another 10 to 15 bhp.
With the re-map you will get a nice wallop of torque at 2000rpm and from then on you wouldn't know it was the same engine. Make sure your MAF is working correctly first though as this can cloud the engine's performance as standard and will mess up any re-mapping until it's sorted.

I agree with Andy, you should be able to get around 120-125hp (the 90 produces around 100hp stock). If your thinking of changing the injectors, I would go with some uprate injector nozzles from Kerma and save a bit on the full 110 injectors.

Depends if you can source some second hand 110 injectors on the cheap, the fitting and setting up of nozzles can be pretty expensive. I ended up leaving my uprated nozzles on my old Beezer when I p/x'ed it as it was going to cost more to get the things removed than I would get for them selling them.
