Diesels Win

Speaking to an old a friend who is heavily involved in the management of BTCC, the I gather that in the recent FIA TC race at Monza Seat diesels trounced the petrol cars!! The organisers are now worrying about changing the equivalence

Currently the S2000D rules allow for pretty much anything (like unlimited boost etc) - so it's no suprise.

2008 will have a more restricted S2000D set of rules applied I'm sure.

Surely the power to weight ratios would have to be maintained just like in the VW Racing Cup, so boost is irrelevant? It's the torque figures where the diesels have the advantage... Lloyd Allard, when racing against R32s, said that 2WD diesel could give better corner turn in, and exit power, and hence why he led the VW Cup for the majority of last season!

PWR isn't a measurable factor in S2000 Rules though.

Base weight is maintained (+35kg for Tdi)

rehashed road cars like the VW cup are nothing like WTCC spec cars...... certainly not those with 'low' power figures as Allards run (lol)

The S2000D Leon has a reported 280+bhp and well north of 320lbft, whereas the N/a petrol one has (on a good day) 260bhp & somewhere in the region of 200lbft.

So the torque & extra power help lug the ungainly shape that is the Leon through the air.

Granted the heavier 'nose' weight isn't doing it any favours, but it's just walking all over the competition side by side (because of it's unrestricted rules)

Just had a quick scan of that, any size injector, any size turbo ( as long as it's in mainstream use) that's surely a license to run what ever power you want!

But like the VW cup that Lloyd runs in, you have to keep the power tuning down. The only advantage of bigger gear is you get that max power more efficiently / faster? Lloyd said his car was tested often to ensure power is within the limits laid down in the rules. :)

sorry, but the VW cup 'testing' is ******

dragging your feet on a competitors RR to produce greater coast down losses, changing the IC, or covering it up so it heatsoaks badly. adjustable boost etc.

you name it, it's been done. not pointing fingers, but certainly comparing VW Cup to WTCC is comparing go karting sessions with your mates to F1
