Do the Mk1 Leons (and the Mk4 Golf) TDI's have a diesel particulate filter or was this introduced later as i have heard they need replacing after 100k+ miles and are very expensive. I am looking at high mileage cars so i dont want a nasty shock later on.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Ah ok then, I'm currently looking at a Golf GT TDI 150 with 89,000 on the clock, he is asking 4,000 for it but it has a crack in the sump( i have a friend at the VW garage who says he could get it done for just over £100)
what do you think to the pricing?

I'd be more worried about the crack in the sump. If it's leaking oil then there's a chance it's been run without enough oil in it, in which case I'd be passing on that one. Lack of oil will kill a pd injection system very quickly, and certainly bugger the turbo.

Pricewise though I'd say that was reasonable, depending on the age of course.

Take the valve cover off and check the camshaft for excessive wear. He'll know what to look for, and if he doesn't then don't take his advice. ;) The 150 engine is very susceptible to camshaft failure, and oil starvation is no help at all. Check for vibration through the steering and pedals aswell. Turbo noise would be another thing to listen for, whining or screaming bearings is not good.

Ok then, well i think we may go take a look tomoz, yeh, i think he knows what he is looking for, he has the 100bhp version asweel so he should have a rough idea what it should feel like to drive... etc...

it will then be a painful trip into some modifications for the engine, why do they make the power so easy to gain. haha

thanks for the help.
