After over a month now of trying to find another car to replace my ibiza, I decided on wanting to keep in the SEAT family and get a Leon... but after a bit research I discovered you can get the same amazing chasis & engines, but in saloon form for about a grand less when compared with the Leons. So the Toledo path is the one I think I will take...

But...

I don't know whether to get the 1.9tdi 110 or the 1.8 20v se (and then convert it to LPG).

Which one will give the best performance & economy combined?

And which one would be worth more when I come to sell it? The diesel or the petrol with LPG?

Any advice much appreciated

Cheers,

Gordz

p.s. I believe these engines are in the Leon too, hence this post in the Leon section!

LPG isn't a bad idea but will seriously limit the market on reselling as they seem to be the kiss of death 2nd hand

a high miler tdi will always sell better than an LPG in used car market to be honest

I have the 1.8 20v S

I get between 27mpg and 33 mpg depending on how i drive

i also do a lot of short journeys which will effect this

Two interesting replies, cheers guys.

So, the diesel will hold it's value better... and may even be cheaper to run if the petrol only gets around 30mpg, I don't know how much more mpg I would be getting with LPG conversion?

But I've heard the diesels get around 45 - 50 mpg even if they're thrashed! Is this true? This would be handy as I've not got the lightest right foot!

I am also being drawn towards the diesel because of the tuning possibilities (remaps etc.)

Diesel - I average in the Seat between 43 and 47 mpg depending on what time of year it is running around locally.

This will be equivelent to your town runs - urban cycle mpg. On a run mid 50's I reckon.

LPG is not as effiecient as petrol and slightly worse mpg (about 10% down on unleaded).

Diesel is the way to go but you'll pay (the initial price) for the benefit of it too.

When you do less than 300 in the Accord and about 500 in the Seat and 600 in the Pug it does make you think.

Well I want a decent mix of performance & economy. I do quite a bit of motorway / main A road driving, and don't venture into to towns that often.

And especially since I am only planning of keeping my next car for 1 - 2 years, maybe a diesel is the way to go if I don't want to lose too much money on depreciation etc.

Thanks again for the replies! Much appreciated.

Another thing to take into consideration is that once you have fitted an LPG tank to a car it will require regular servicing seperately to the car.

Also, LPG systems are expensive: I don't think i've heard of one costing less than 800-1000 pounds. Which is about half the price of a half decent toledo tdi.

I bought a toledo tdi for my first nice car and couldn't say a bad word about it. All the performance is useable because of the power in the low revs, you're never out of the powerband. and i really miss getting 50mpg

I have never driven the 1.8 20v non turbo so couldn't pass comment on it i'm afriad - i realise that this post is tdi biased but it is a fantastic engine.

Never thought about the servicing of LPG, would have to get the car serviced twice every year then! LPG is starting to look a bit of a crap choice now to be honest! Glad I posted this first before going out and buying one!

Just another quick question now I think I've decided on getting a diesel...

Should I avoid high mileage Leons / Toledos? Or will the Tdi engine last (almost) forever with good servicing?

And when I say high mileage I mean 90k and above.

Would it be better to (for example) go for a low mileage tdi with NO service history or a high mileage tdi with FULL service history?

Cheers.
