Dial Question

Really simple one.

Should the dials/aircon/window buttons light all the time when the car is on, or should they only come on when you switch the sidelights/headlights on?

Fair enough, I spotted a For Sale thread for a boost guage that said it was "ready to wire to sidelights, so that it illuminated when the lights were turned one", though for a second that all dials were supposed to operate like that and wondered if I had a fault.
