anyone know how much a fuel filter for a pd 160 tdi cupra fuel filter costs? is it the same size/fitting as that of the other diesels or is it a 'special' one ?!

i assume its a simple thing to change as my mate said its the cyilinder shaped thing on the front right of the car?!

Yes it's the cylinder behind the driver's side headlight.

Should be fairly straighforward to replace, although my dealer managed to break some of the plastic retaining clips holding the filter into the housing...just go careful!

Can't remember the cost but it's nothing silly.

dead easy to replace, its the metal canister with the fuel pipes in and out of, on the left of the engine, simply open the clips on the pipes slide them back and pull off the pipes, remove circlip and lift up big plastic pluger on top, and loosen clamp on old fuel filter and slide up, pour the diesel in it into the new filter then refit.

They are cheap, get one from your local euro car parts (www.eurocarparts.co.uk) for about £8. i did a search for you :-

BOSCH n/a 503440780 FUEL FILTER POLO 01-- DIESEL
£16.30
GUTTMANN n/a 503440781 FUEL FILTER POLO 01-- DIESEL
£8.03
FRAM n/a 503440782 FUEL FILTER POLO 01-- DIESEL
£14.15

thanks for that mate, i can see you did a search on the polo and its looking good if they are just standard ones. my mate has a mk4 golf and knows a guy in VW, so hopefully i can get one there for cheap, are they the same as on the golf by any chance?

is there a difference with regards to make? my mate also told me NOT to use the existing fuel from the filter as there is loads of crap usually in it???

i did a search using your car model. And yes generally they do all use the same as the TDI engine is the same accross models/brands.

And yes fair point about transferring some rubbish from the old filter, just cant bear to waste diesel so tend to transfer a little.

There are different variants of fuel filter for TDIs out there - as I found out when buying one for the Passat.

It depends on where the fuel cooler is positioned on different cars. For example, the Ibiza uses a heatsink cooler under the driver's footwell, but other VW models have a separate water circuit, heat exchange and mini-radiator - and on these, the little heat exchanger is screwed to the top of the fuel filter.

There are 3 different variants just for the Passat, and I vaguely recall the Polo might have a cooler on top of the fuel filter as well.

So best to check what you're getting :)

will a dirty fiel filter produce more black smoke... i have noticed a lot of smoke recently... had the bumper off for boost leaks none... so i am now trying to find other courses..

thinking of removing EGR valve and cleaning the exhaust of any built up carbon. and then starting from fresh?
