Dashboard lights

During the daytime the dashboard is back lit but mine seems to dim randomly. At night with the headlights on they are fine.

The car doesn't have auto lights and the dimming follows no pattern.

I'll take it to the dealer in the new year but just wondered if anyone else had this problem?

Car is as my sig it's 2017 and about 4 weeks old and the dash lights have done this from new.

I'm sure this has been raised before and they're meant to do it. I'm sure there's a light sensor in the dashboard that detects light and automatically adjusts the back lighting. I agree it's annoying, I'd rather have them on all the time or off and on with the lights.

Thanks for the reply Wings.

If it's meant to do it then it's daft!

There is no reason to dim them during the day and, as I said, it seems to be completely random.

The other thing that is slightly annoying is needing to use the centre screen to dim the dash lights at night.

I sometimes (when the left hand seat speed limiter isn't present!) like to completely dim the dash lights and enjoy the drive if you get what I mean!

It will dim the dashboard if it feels you should have your lights on.

The dashboard sensor and the headlight sensor are separate (for cars with autolights) so sometimes when I have my lights on auto, the car will dim the dash but not put the headlights on.

Its a quirk but ive got used to it.

Not really daft. It’s a safety feature used on Seats and the other brands in the VW / Audi group. If your instrument panel lighting dims down in daylight hours when lighting conditions outside are dull, it’s a prompt for you to turn your lights on so you can see and be seen by others.

I’ve found it very useful when driving into direct sunlight. Which happens most mornings when driving to work.

I fail to see how it is a safety feature when it stops you seeing what speed your doing!

As I've said the dimming is just random, it even dims in bright sunlight.

Anyway happy new year to all.

I’ve had VAG cars with this feature for 6-7 years and can’t say I’ve ever noticed the dimming in bright sunlight, other than if driving through, say, a densely wooded area with heavy tree foliage blocking the light, or driving through a tunnel on a sunny day. I’d expect the instrumentation to dim in those conditions though.

If you can’t see what speed you’re doing then it’s suggesting you need to put your lights on for safety’s sake so you can be seen, as well as you being able to see your instruments. If you think the sensor that controls this is too sensitive in your car, then maybe it’s possible for this to be adjusted by the dealer?

And happy new year to you too.

I stuck a small piece of black tape on the screen over the sensor, result is lights are constantly dim, I then adjusted the dash light level to where I was happy, jobs a good un.
Our lights are constantly on auto so don't need prompting when to turn them on although it does seem that the Seat lights come on in conditions that other marques in the VW/Audi group don't deem it needed?

Took me awhile to get what was the left hand seat speed limiter! :D

Was thinking, wasn't the speed limited on the stalk next to the steering wheel, yes it's on the left! But it's on the seat?

DOH, just got it...it's your significant other half, a human speed limiter!

As others have said it’s a quirk of the brand. Some folk like it but I found it annoying, especially as the has DRL’s.
I did a vcds mod to have the tail lights on all the time and this seemed to sort it.
