Cutting Out! Help!

Hey all!

I am way down here in Australia and i drive a 1995 Seat Cordoba (these cars are kinda scarce in Australia). It is such a great car too.

Lately i've been having this problem with it though and it is kinda getting to me. It usually only happens during or after heavy rain.

Firstly, the car is sometimes difficult to start. The engine turns and turns but just can't kick over. And when it does kick over, it only stays running for a few seconds at best then cuts out.

That is half of it.

The other half is sometimes the engine does stay running, but the idle feels really lumpy, almost like it is running on 3 cylinders, but not quite. At this time, if you try to accelerate the car really, really fights you. The revs try to drop or cut despite your putting your foot down. And if you just try to take off normally once you let the clutch out the revs will cut completely unless you rev it to about 3000rpm then let the clutch out. If this does happen, continue to drive the car for about 20 mins and the problem seems to go away.

I have replaced the plugs and leads, and the distributor is new. I thought it might be the air filter so i replaced that and the problem still happens.

I've spoken to my mechanic about this and he said "It is most likely the coil. This is pretty expensive and you'll have to leave it here for a while."

What coil is he talking about though?

The only coil i could think of would be the ignition coil - but how would that make any difference if the car can start sometimes, it just runs poorly for a little while.

Are there any other coils it could be? Or anything else it could be? And why would it only happen during or after rain?

I'm starting to get really concerned about this because in 4 weeks time i'm driving 1200km to the snow and i just know something like this would happen to me when i'm stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Anybody's help would be greatly appreciated!!:ban:

It could be the coil I suppose. If you follow the plug leads from the distributor one of them will go to a box on the firewall. That's the coil.

Does it only happen after heavy rain or at other times too? I used to have a Fiesta may may years ago that would never start after rain. I never knew why.

hey thanks for the reply!!!

if it is indeed the coil; then how could it affect the car when the car is actually running?
