Custom remaps - How custom exactly?

I'll be honest and say I'm a little sceptical of how 'custom' they are exactly. Would I be correct in saying they obviously don't re-write all the maps completely from scratch every time a car rolls up that they're mapped before?

Secondly, would I also be correct in saying all they do then is choose a boost/timing map (one they've made earlier Blue Peter style) to upload based on the mods the engine has, i.e more aggressive timing map for an engine with some bolt on mods. Basically the same thing a Revo SPS unit does?

Or are they painstakingly tweaking individual paramaters (what are Bosch maps, 16x16 arrays?) to suit that specific engine? How long does your average custom remap take, I imagine modifying/testing/retesting individual map parameters takes aaaaagggggessss, especially if you want it doing safely. Look at the amount of R&D time your average 'generic' map goes through.

I am aware this discussion may get a little heated and I'll be glad to be re-educated on custom remaps.

it depends on the tools you use (some of the ones used are comedy in their resolution)

But you've got the gist really.

one 'custom' tuner uses Revo's lemmiwinks to adjust the timing (I think their tool can only adjust torque requests)

Why don't Revo cash in on the 'custom' mapping game, they alter boost/timing dependant on mods/fuel when you get it done ;)

Custom/tailored to suit mods... is as much down to the extent of mods as it is the tools available to recode/programme the me7.

Some tuners have more access to me7 than others.

REVO has SPS3-select to adjust boost and ign timing, other supplemental programs are available from custom-settings, lemmiwinks, and the one i use unitronic (cos its usb compatible with my vag-com lead).

stage 1 & 2 "tunes" on similar hardware are not so custom, but tailored... go extreme on hardware on stage 3, and its certainly not stock code, but very much tuned to suit the hardware and thats not done quickly unless you have previous files on same hardware/same ecu as a head start.

you can "tune" quite a lot on the likes of uni-settings as I have been doing on mine.

It really depends on where you go to have the "custom" map, generally when i setup a new car with mods like cams etc i will start off with a good base that i had already made on the dyno to a similar car, then either live emulate the ecu so i can change in realtime or edit the software, upload to the car and hold in steady state to see the changes in tractive effort and afr.

Alot of so called custom maps from many tuners are some what not so custom as they are bought maps and they do not have the facilities to edit them let alone know what to do if they could!
