What is it?

Here’s the new CUPRA Terramar VZ First Edition 1.5 e-Hybrid 272PS. CUPRA’s new SUV. The colour is Dark Void, a cool purply metallic colour. Just how sporty is it? How does the e-Hybrid perform? Should you pick it over a Formentor? We’ll answer these questions in the video review.

Verdict
Great looks, cool technology, comfortable drive. All you’d want in an SUV. Only the powertrain and gearbox in this edition lets it down. We’d choose the 2.0 Petrol over this if you want a driver’s car.

Virtual pedal. Oh yes you need the key on your person at the back, foot underneath and step back. No step back and it won't work. The step back breaks the link between you and the car, so the car knows it won't hit you in the face with the tailgate or close to it. Hence why it won't open... foot underneath, in the centre and step back. Health and Safety note watch where you step back . Rear parking and curbs you learn after staggering on a curb.

Virtual pedal is useful, no grubby fingers from the button, no bending and you can have your hands full for loading and unloading.

I'd turn off that synthetic engine sound. Gimmick.

As mused the 150 TSI DSG wont be everybody's cup of tea with the added hybrid weight. I don't know how that compares with the Cupra Ateca where there were groans when that engine was put on that Cupra... big engine guys.

You'd buy it for the hybrid functionality and economy. Hybrids are probably town cars with the petrol engine to take you out of the city. An economic run around. EVs county run arounds and then back home for plugging in for economy charging or cross county with 30 minute fast charging stops. 2litre TSI if non plussed about hybrid. No EV version yet in this model.

Interesting paint colour and upholstery.

Is that the DQ200 gear box ?. Some history there but it would be unscientific to muse on that. Just when someone breaks one if it is. Quick Google Formentor is reputed to have the DQ381 so probably has that. The other one is considered to be good in 1.0 litre TSIs... got fitted to bigger engines then had the negative reports.

Gearbox number is denoting the max torque it can handle, it is DQ400e in this case, which is a complex marvel of tech, very smooth changes between ICE and electric, and the electric motor is housed into the gearbox. Complex piece of tech but impressive.

I have my 272hp since yesterday, 200Km in.

Pros:
- really comfortable in motorway
- suspension far better than my 1.5 Formentor
- more powerful than ^
- overall better build quality
- seamless transition between electric and ICE
- more economical
- cupra mode engine sound not intrusive (for my taste)
- far better infotainment system (size, responsiveness, menu)

Cons:
- feels and is heavier
- side mirrors position, I have to turn my head to a large degree
- heavier steering wheel even in comfort mode
- the petrol 265hp feels lighter in all respects.
- not for petrolheads (not necessarily bad thing)
- needs cupra mode or individual setup to a harder suspension setting to minimize bending and feel safer in high speed turns

Just a quick note; it is not always an exact notation. For example DQ381 is 420Nm, DQ200 is 250Nm, DQ500 is 600Nm etc.

Good review; thanks for putting it together (y)
Those door mirrors; the positioning of them looks very strange. My OH is about 5'5" tall and I can see her having even bigger problems using them with her seat positioned nearer the wheel than yours was.

The mirrors seem to be the common theme. Expect you get use to them.

Quite a few links about the gearbox now we know what it is:

Links as about it, not links about problems with it. On DSGs it's always ill advised to remap the engine given that VW have in the past used problematic ones on larger engines (DQ200). In a hybrid you got the marriage between the electric and petrol so you really wouldn't buy a hybrid and consider remapping it... so not for petrol heads.

I drive my DSG diesel in automatic mode never touch the paddles, never have a need. Sometimes I wonder whether those people with problematic boxes where they aren't suppose to be problematic, have been driving them like a racing car on the paddles or / and have the engine chipped... suppose some would say well they are put there for a reason. Plenty of shift in a 2.0 TDI DSG without flipping the paddles.

Enjoy your car @jim64 . Audi build quality and all that.

Did just check for paddles on Syphons video... yes no you don't stand on one leg and wiggle your foot underneath... you scamper off after the foot goes underneath. Vag needs an SSP for dealers on that :ROFLMAO: .

Probably the technical author on the virtual pedal but that's how it works. My cat 🐈 also does it which creates a certain amount of alarm when that happens, twice now. He dashes underneath with me standing there, the tailgate opens and I'm thinking that's a fault... err no a fast moving cat with me breaking the link... him on proximity detection . Garfield breed. The same breed use to slide down the windscreen grinning when you arrived where he lived 😅. They are jokers.
