Cupra Conversion

Ok then. Thanks to the influence of T. Spark (all started about 6months back), I may be tempted to convert the 1.4 monster I have, into a 1.8t beast. And I don't mean a look-a-like like adam1.4biza :cartman: (joking mate)

I always said no, as it would be easier just to buy a new car. But as I am gonna be at uni in September for 4 years, I doubt I can afford a "new car", which means keeping my current one, for another 4 years! At the mo, I have about 126k on the clock. No doubt it will die in about a year or so, so may aswell get a big(ger) engine dropped in.

So a few things,

Keep ya eyes and ears open please for an engine

How easy would it be?

How easy would dropping a TDi in?

What else would need to be changed other than I assume, brakes, gearbox etc. I'm guessin the wiring looms would be the same?

Another thing, would it possible to get all the "extras" that a cupra has? TCS, Computer etc? Not that I'd really need that! Oh, and I WOULD need ABS

:D :D :D

Sounds a daft idea I know, and I may not even follow through with it, but it's an option i'm SERIOUSLY considerin within the next few years!

I'm sick of not having a quick car, or a car I can slightly tune. And being at the back of a convoy aint no fun anymore :(

I'd stick with what you got and save like mad until you can afford a Cupra or something else tbh. Otherwise your throwing a lot of time and money into a car that's not what it should be if that makes sense. Jeez, may be you need to start saving for uni! Maybe I'm too sensible!!

I do understand your frustration though.

Think I may be tempted to try a DERV engine in it! Love goin for a spin in Sparkys, and still get good MPG! But I prefer the looks of the Mk3 over the Mk4!

OR

another option, could be wait for the Mk5 cupra. But if i'm right in thinkin, that's not release until about 2010! I'll still be at uni and poor :(

Yeah, bloody annoying! I need a decent win on the Euro! a few k would be fine. Maybe buy a Mk4 FR! Still unsure on them, the arse end looks nice, but the front aint no where near as nice as the Mk3 Cupra

Deffo not worth doing the 20vt conversion unless you can do it yourself and source a cheap car/parts

PD 130/150/170 engine would be good but more work and money involved :(

Ive said over MSN mat, no point doing a 1.8T as they come with it!

However, source a PD130 engine and either hyprid it, or source a PD150/160 engine and map it, either way you will see circa 200bhp and will be a great little MK3 to show off as they didnt come with those engines as standard.

Anyone fancy a SCN project car meet? Take the car down to different locations every weekend and get SCN members to work on it :D

i know exactly where your coming from. i had a 1.4 chill edition for a year before getting banned. then managed to get my license back, and thought screw it! i'm gonna get a cupra :)
so £3.5k later, i had one.
they are coming down in price now due to the age. just keep an eye out for them . well worth the money in my opinion.
my car is his milage, but the problems i'm getting tend to be small ones which are easily sorted.

thing with buy a cupra now, is by the time i can afford one, there wont be many decent/low mileage ones left!

Think a Euro TDi might be in order

with going diesel you will need to change all of the fuel lines tank, etc and that is a nightmare,
and your left with a smoking oil burner,

my mates has a 1400 mk2 and he decided to go quicker and decided down the line of a polo g40 lump, went pritty much straight in mounts etc..... and i think it cost him around 100quid for a specialist to wires and make it run, small intercooler and iv got a right little sleeper, he did it all for around a grand and it goes well, decat filter few other little mods and i think it pushed near 140bhp, the ecu had been mapped slightley mind,

you could go down that route or even its big bro the g60!

hmmm cant help but think a cupra conversion would cost u just as much as buying and insuring a genuine mk3 cupra, fuel would be same as would tax n stuff if you registered it on log book.
Maybe consider a tdi conversion but just sound slike so much work and expense, and then when u sell it it'll be worth v little espec considering what you'd have spent.
Why not keep it as it is, put up with lack of power, and save your money for something that's quick as standard in a year or two.

Just some thoughts, would be interesting to see a conversion though lol.

was gonna get the Mk4 FR TDI PD130 a few months back with remap already on it! IIRC it was about 6k

In the end I declined as didnt fancy another loan until i was 28!

Guess it was good i said no as i'm goin to uni and wouldnt be able to afford both uni and car loan. Plus, i love the Mk3 looks much more than the mk4 (not that the mk4 is ugle, the mk3 looks more aggresive :D)

yeh I kinda agree about mk3's looks. But a mk3 TDI would be noticebly quicker in real life driving (50-70mph, 30-60mph etc) thanks to torque, plus they look bit more cupra like as standard (black B pillar and other stuff)

Thoughts Mat?

Mat. dont do it mate. i was thinking about possibly doing this to mine a while back, i got some insurance quotes and priced up how much things would cost, in the end i worked out i could afford a nice low milage cupra with decent mods with insurance and still save money.

unfortunatly the amount fo work to make it in to a cupra will cost far too much.

All of the above, especially the thing about getting insurance on a conversion!

However the hardest thing will probably be selling it once your done. Who would buy a converted 1.4 when they could have the real McCoy for the same price!

Do a little saving, it'll be worth it!
