Cupra 290 stage 1 clutch

Looking for some advice....

Spent hours trawling through past posts and Google searches....

Wondering what the best kind of set up is clutch wise.

Noticed that my clutch is starting to slip... Done just over 40k and recently had a stage one remap done.

Was going to do the whole shabang in a oner... DMF and Clutch kit

Seen mainly RTS and Sachs

But don't know which to go for or where is best to get it from.

Cheers in advance

I just went to the APR Stage 1 high torque map on my 290.

I replaced my clutch and flywheel just before the remap as I assumed it would eventually start slipping with the map. I went for a Helix 6-paddle sintered clutch (rated to 450lbft I think) and the Sachs equivalent of the OEM DMF. I obviously can't comment on how it compares to the Sachs clutch but the 6 paddle is far less jerky at low speed when moving off than I thought it would be. Not too dissimilar to the stock clutch feel and appears to be handling the extra torque quite well although I've only done around 1000 miles with the map.

Cheers for the response pal.

Where did you get the work done and how much did it cost?

I live in Glasgow so got it done at the local APR dealer. Garage is called Ecotune but probably only of use to you if you are in Scotland. It was around £1400ish for new clutch and flywheel fitted. I'd only done around 15k miles on my car and the original clutch and flywheel looked almost brand new when they came out.

I spoke to AwesomeGTI about doing the work in Manchester as they were a little cheaper than what Ecotune originally quoted me. They were using the Sachs clutch. There is also VAG Manchester who were using the Helix clutches and I think someone on the forum used them. Prices were all very similar in the end.

I was reading today that the new 7-speed DSG is dry cooling, and is only able to supply 184lb ft unlike the 6 speed which is wet cooling. Is there a way to get round this?

Think you're talking about a different 7 speed. Your new Cupra will have more torque than that as standard!

This is true. The smaller VAG engines are usually coupled with the dry DSG7 DQ200 which is good for 250 Nm while Audi S3, Golf R and Cupra for example use the wet DSG7 DQ381 rated at 420 Nm.

Thats good to know then. The reviewer at carwow was talking out his arse then. Saying how you can only get 184 nm out of a cuora. I thought that sounded stupidly low for a car with close to 300 bhp.

Not even close...

2.0 TSI 213kW DSG-7 Start/Stop (290HP)
  • 290 HP. HP (213 kW)
  • 290 HP. Max. Power. (5300 - 6500 rpm)
  • 380 Nm. Max. Torque. (1,950 - 5,300 rpm)

This is the same guy that thinks the honda civic is the best hot hatch on the market at the moment.
To be fair, a lot of car magazines say it is. From a drivers car point of view it’s got to be a hell of a lot of fun.

As for looks, well it’s marmite. I hate marmite but love the look of the Civic. My wife however does not. But it’s a mute point anyway as I needed an estate. In another 3 years and I don’t think we will but I can’t see anything I like more than mine. Yeah there are other Cupra’s out there but mine is quite rare.

I may feel differently in 3 years when all the Cuora R ST’s are about and look a likes now the parts or available. Or I may just turn my car into a proper R ST with the wheel arch extensions...

Does the nomal R ST have wheel arch extentions? or are you talking about putting the wheel arches from the Cupra R 5dr on your ST?
I saw someone with a custom body kit on the pre facelift Leon Cupra to make it look like the Cupra R. It looked quite cool but for the cost of it... May as well have bought another car.

I'm with you though. When i started thinking about another car about 6 months ago, there isn't another car on the market that takes my fancy. I spend a lot of time in the countryside so i cosnidered a 4x4. A merc GLA or a BMW X2, I also seriously considered the Cupra Ateca but was sightly out of the price bracket i wanted to be in.

I have lots of mates with 4x4's so tend to make use of them if i need to. Plus for my commute I like having my hatchback so thats the route i went down. May consider getting a defender or something when i really need it.

Yeah that was in Mexico, and after I messaged on their page it looked like an R replica they pointed out every part of it was more aggressive. So if you look closely you can see that the splitter sticks out further, the spoiler is more aggressive and the archs are ever so slightly wider (can't see that last bit myself but splitter and spoiler can be seen).

Yeah I was thinking if I get serious with this car I'd get the genuine R archs and turn it into a proper R ST. However the rear bumper parts woudl need to be adapted as the 5 door rear curves sooner. I've also considered just buying the ST X-perience archs instead...
