Crunching from gearbox, any advice please!

Hi, I've been lurking around for a while but now I've got a problem the search can't help with

A slow oil leak in my gearbox has left one or more bearings sounding near death due to oil starvation. Has anyone had any experience of this, any rough guesses how long it's likely to survive? Obviously it's full of oil now! The bearing noise is definately a rattle, like big end bearings or cv joint rather than a whine, at idle and when driving which leads me to think it's had it...

So second question, anyone know where I can get an 085 gearbox for under £100 from? Tried ebay and a couple of scrap yards around Dundee & £150 seems to be the going rate The car only cost £600, seems a bit steep for such a common box or am I expecting too much?

Hope someone out there can help, I'd really appreciate it!

Anyone? Would have thought with all the gearbox issues on here someone would know something, or is this a test to see how patient noobs are?

try the well known auction site 'ibiza breaking' brings up a few good sources

Cheers for getting back, fingers crossed it'll hold out until I can get a replacement... Any ideas what would happen if a bearing dies in use? Is it going to try and launch bits of metal into my passenger or will I just find gears harder to select until I eventually lose 1 or 2? Mainly drive by myself so could stick a disclaimer on the passenger glove box or something...

The local scrappy has just got one in, fingers crossed it'll be the right code! By play it safe do you mean not driving the car or were you taking the disclaimer idea seriously! I need the car for work so have to drive it regularly, hence the panic!

If the bearing fail bits of bearing will go into the gears and you'll loose drive, worst case scenario.

Box came on loads of 1.4 VAG so don't just limit yourself to SEAT's

Crap, just bought one from Eddie Dunn's. £100 & not from the car I asked for so don't know anything about it Where were you!

For future reference the box has done 500 miles of motorway and around 1000 miles of town driving before the hideous death rattle developed a sinister whine New box going in hopefully Weds...

Have you still got this 'box? The one I got from the scrap yard wont fit my linkage, selector rod is about half the length and the casing has extra lugs cast into it which foul my linkage .

I've not got enough posts to pm yet but if someone else is watching & would pm Mellow Yello for me (assuming this is allowed) I'd be very grateful.
