Creaky Dashboard / Steering Column

Hi all

I'm new to both this site and the world of Seat, having just bought a new FR TDi 150 in Emoción Red as part of the New Year's Revlution deal. And very happy I am with it too. Except for one thing, and I have looked around the site to see if it's been mentioned before, but doesn't seem to.

Now I know build quality is a thorny issue that is one of the few things Golf owners can fire back at us as to good reasons to buy a VW over a Seat or Skoda, but does anyone else's steering column/the surrounding plastic panel (by the rake adjuster) squeak really irritatingly, especially on bumps (and in a car with such a firm ride, this is quite an issue)?

I know it is this, because if you squeeze or press it yourself, it makes the same noise (and there seems to be some movement in it). It is especially apparent to the left of the steering wheel, but I cannot determine if it is the bigger panel or the one covering the ignition system that causes the problem.

Anyway, does anyone have any remedies for this problem that is slightly marring my enjoyment of an otherwise superb car? My Dad mentioned something about putting draft excluder around it or something. Any input would be appreciated.

Many thanks and regards

Rob

Is that not uncomfortable? I'll give it a try. It's disappointing when niggles like that get past such a quality car.

It's less creaky than my Mum's new Fiesta, but I'm allergic to rattles and squeaks in cars - which is funny as my previous car was an (old) Mini :p

I won't let a creak defeat me, I will stop it! It doesn't bother me when I have music on, which is most of the time, but it'd still be nice to cut out.

It was happening on mine all the time, but I tried repostioning the steering wheel and that seemed to cure it.

Worth a try!!

i can't really say my R has any rattles at all couple of little creaks but you expect that on a stiff car

I have one right behind the steering wheel that only happens when its warming up and the glove box wont give up rattling.

To be fair to dealer they got rid of the other 4 :D Im going to try sorting it myself this time - found in my MK4 golf that slim cuts of rubber in key places soon sorted them out

I have that one too...

I think it is where the plastic 'filler' bit goes between the steering console and the bottom of the speedo pod. Mine only happens in the morning when it is cold, seems to go when it warms up. Will have a go with some silicon lube spray from Halfords to see how it goes...

I got the same! If you stick your fingers in the gap between the steering column housing and the dash, on the left, you can stop it, so i got a pice of close cell rubber (black) stuck it in the gap and hey presto! Squeek gone. Isn't technology brilliant! :D

I've not actually driven the car or got in it all weekend, so my drive to work tomorrow morning will probably be spent farting about with the rake adjuster and holding bits of trim to work out where to try sticking/spraying things. I'm determined to get rid of it, as other than that I don't really have any other noises that I'm aware of yet.

Thanks for the input all.

Hi , seems to be Leon thing, Mine seems to be okay if the steering wheel is set to it upper most setting.

That's interesting, because my experimentation on the way to work this morning (when sitting at lights rather than adjusting it while driving), seems to prove that it stops if it's anywhere *but* its uppermost setting. I've moved it half an inch down and it's stopped now, which is good. But now my driving position's not right and I spent the journey home messing with my seat height adjuster and everything trying to get comfortable with the wheel's new non creaky position. :p
