Cost of a new Gearbox

I had problems with my reverse gear earlier in the week, then lost 1st and 2nd.
Limped to the Seat Dealer today and they say I need a new box and clutch and it would cost £2600!! Naturally I declined and can borrow a family car while I contemplate my options.

Does anyone know how much a new (refurbished) gearbox and clutch should cost?? The dealer said the refurbished gearbox alone is £1700.

As my car has done 61,000 miles and is only worth £5000ish I don't really want to spend that much money. I am sure I can get it done cheaper. Have a good mechanic back at my parents that I can use to do it.

Mine cost about £700-800 for the gearbox rebuild and altogether about £1200 including a new clutch nd fitting. It did need a new dmf too but i couldnt afford it at the time but im saving up to get it done now which is a bit of a pain! I got quoted £400 for a second hand box but there is now telling how long it would last!

this same problem happend to me two weeks ago, but it was my 4th and 5th gears that went.

went down to a local garage, guy had a look at it, said it will need a box rebuid and a new clutch, didnt as about price just wanted car fixed.

got a call to pick the car up, went down, got told the price £350 for parts and labour!!!

tbh i thought he was taking the p*ss, but he showed me the invoice that he wrote up, and sure enough thats what the price was.

so my advice....dont go to the stealers, just go to a mechanic around your area:)

I only went to the dealer as the drive involved not too many starts on the journey and most of it is motorway so best place with no 1st and 2nd, and they were only place I knew round here who could fit me in cheaply. Will limp the car to my parents later this week and get it looked at down there as its not London and know a good mechanic there.

get it towed.... you don't want to drive & a 'bit' of gearbox to lodge itself in the moving parts of the gearbox.

Have phoned a transmission specialist away from London and they have quoted approx £1200 worst case scenerio, a bit better than the dealers £2600!!

I will investigate towing, don;t think my AA membership covers towing all the way but will see!!
