Coolant

My car (cupra) is overheating.
I noted that the coolant was a tiny bit below the Minimum level the other day when cleaning the air filter. Today the engine management light came on and whilst sitting in traffic the temp starts to rise quickly.

Obviously gonna top it up tomorrow, BUT, a quick search on here said something about the air con and coolant being connected. I had my Air Con re-gassed in sept 06 but at service recently they noted its not cooling as much as it should. Have I missed a beat somewhere or are these two connected?

Cheers

Read your post goble and coming to think of it, havent heard the fans on for a few days..!
What a/c fans do you mean? A/C blows at all speeds in car but just isnt very cold despite recent re-gas.

Anyway, I checked the fuses on top of battery and sure enough, the things gone, thankfully not completely melting the box.
Think it'll hold another fuse (only slightly melted at edges) but is that ok or should i really replace the holder?
Am i also good to top coolant up with water or not?

Cheers

I replaced my holder, it had melted a bit, well quite a bit

I wasnt going to replace it but I found the melted fuse at the same time my throttle body had died

didnt know hte throttle body was to blame so ended up changing the fusebox, even though the old box took a new fuse in there fine, after i chiselled out the melted one

personally, If I was back one month ago, i would have just kept the old fuse box as it worked with a new fuse in there

but alot will tell you to change the fusebox

my new box was a tighter fit for the fuses so a slight design change there

aahhh

[:@]Well I went to take out the blown fuse and in true style half the metal is burnt into the holder :censored:

I'm supposed to be driving to a wedding today and viewing houses tomorrow and tue/wed. In predictable helpful style Seat say they can get the car in on Tuesday but will need to keep it as they will need to investigate why fuse melted and order parts accordingly. Just kind of frustrating that these things happen when you really need the damn car . Anyway rant over.

If I am sitting in traffic the engine temp is rising above 90 but if moving stays at 90 fine. Question is: driving I need to do is motorway - will that be safe enough or am I likley to do further damage??

Oh and does the fuse box HAVE to be fitted by SEAT as they recommend?

Cheers

yep seat told me i'm better off fitting myself. for now I have just changed the fuse after levering the melted fuse out for now and its been fine for 10 days.

I wouldn't have thought you'd overheat on the motorway if traffic's freeflowing.

When that happened to me i just kept the heater on hi and full to take the heat out of there when you're slow moving, which got me through an awkward spot in london rush hour where i couldnt pull over.

hmmm
will go and see if i can prise out the burnt metal and fit another.
Not sure if gonna risk the motorway as its often crawling some of the way. ahh the joys. fingers crossed.

Just went outside and found that the flatmates girlfriends car has been broken into and had the steering wheel and column nicked!

what next?

I really had to work my old fuse out, used a screwdriver in the end, a tiny one, and a hammer

got it out in the end and a new fuse went in ok,

changing the fuse box takes 10 minutes, anyone can do it, really doesnt take long at all, couple of tools and common sense, just remember where each bit goes, what order etc

as for seat saying the reason, they will probably blame the fans and say they are drawing too much current

if you go to seat expect a big bill for a new fuse box, new fuses, labour, then cost of new fans

just do it at home, new fuse box £40 job done

Tried to get old fuse out but half of it is pretty well lodged. Was in a rush as had to get to a wedding so only had a paper clip to hand! Suprisingly it didnt manage the whole job! Will give it another go tomorrow and probably just order a fuse box on Monday ( along with wing mirror which I smashed last week[:@])

They already started saying it was either the fans or a faulty wire which they would have to search for. He reckoned on at least 1.5hrs labour!

Figure I will fit a new one and if there is a problem it will blow again.

What do I do about the Engine Management Light tho'?

Cheers again.
