Coolant pump issue! now with pictures!!

Seems like my car is falling to pieces at the moment!

Basically, the buzzing noise that I usually hear after turning the car off seems to have disappeared. I understand this to be the coolant pump?

Does it come on every time you switch the engine off? and has anybody ever had this fail?

Is there a fuse or something I should check?

Just had my water pump and cambelt done today! Feels like everything is going wrong at once!

UPDATE - Just had a quick look around the coolant pump area which i assume is this?
coolantpump.jpg

and i found that one of the wires going to the pump was broken at the point where it meets the connector...

The wire was all brown looking too, i tried touching the wire to the connector just after switching the car off but the pump did not start so I guess the rusty wire is to blame there!

So my question is how can I re connect the wire as it has broken just where it goes into the connector and is rusty coloured.

I was thinking of stripping the wire back a bit, cutting off the connector and running the wire straight into the pump? Would this work?

Thanks!

I doubt if that is rust. The wire will be copper.

I guess that the wire has broken because it was made slightly too short and was bent too severely at the connector.

Not for long. Those connectors are heavily engineered for a reason. The inside of a car engine compartment is a lousy environment for electrics - vibration, heat/cold, dirt and water all conspire to make electrical connections corrode and shake loose. The connector seals together to make a waterproof joint and the heavy construction keeps everything well supported.

I've never seen the connectors for sale. I would first try to disassemble the connector, solder extra lengths of suitable wire (thick enough to take the current, braided for flexibility) to the metal blades, reassemble the connector and join the new, longer wires to the wiring harness. That can be done with proper waterproof connectors or by soldering and then sealing inside a waterproof layer (self-amalgamating tape, silicone sealant or the like).

If the connector won't disassemble I'd try to strip back the strain-relief over the broken wire to expose enough bare metal to make a good soldered joint with a new, longer piece of wire, then strip back the other broken end of the wire and solder to that. Finish off both joints with sealant to make them waterproof.

Cheers for that mate, the connector itself does not seem to disassemble, which leaves the problem of the wire has snapped where is joins the connector making soldering it quite difficult really. And nothing to join the wire back onto!

I havent seen these connectors for sale either.

Yes I agree that the wires are not long enough and therefore are bent over to attach to the connector, so i will definately be extending the wires.

And finally, just to double check, one wire is brown and one is red and black, which is live and which is earth?!
