Coolant leak

Would anyone have a suggestion for the following? My coolant tank keeps emptying completely, usually after having run the AC and it's usually a gradual leak. There's no obvious signs of the leak and I've had Seat look at it and they couldn't find any leaks either. Typically while in their garage they couldn't replicate the fault even after having the car in for a day, at the privilege of £99 as I'm out of warranty. Would anyone have any idea of what the fault could be and if there's anything I could do without having to take it back to Seat? They've offered to inspect it again for free if the fault continues but I'm not wanting to waste another day if it means no remedies again.

Are you a member of the AA or RAC? If you are then I'd recommend calling them out and getting them to have a look.

I had a coolant leak on my last car in January and couldn't figure out where it was coming from as it would empty the tank after a four mile journey to the nursery. AA guy came out and filled the header tank with water and got me to rev the engine.

Turns out there was a split in one of the rubber hoses right where it was connected to a join. It took the pressure of the water pump under engine load to force the split open and for the fluid to leak for us to find it, otherwise when the engine was off or idle, the temps weren't high enough to cause the water pump and pressure to build enough to open the split.

Hi there I also had this issue and found that it was the plastic coolant tank itself and we had it ticking on idle but wasn't showing a leak as the last comment mentioned your engine has to be running at higher revs to build up the coolant pressure for it to escape out of slits in pipes or cracks in coolant tanks mine happened to be something so small,I noticed the Capp on my coolant tank had a thinner o ring rubber seal and I took one of an audi same engine and noticed that one was thicker so I changed them over and it has never done it since easy fix so I hope it's as simple for yours too.

Hi dave34. This sounds good and something I'd be able to fix myself. I've been flummoxed with what's going on as the leaks are irregular. But you're quite right I've noticed it more after long motorway drives and have noticed some sort of leak at the bottom of the spherical tank. So if I have your suggestion right you're saying I can fix this by changing just the cap? If so can I ask how you got hold of your Audi one and if you have a part number?

Hi mate yeah I took mine to the garage and they had it up on ramp and it was wet under the coolant tank and they had an audi in on another ramp so we the guy swapped the Capps over when we noticed the seal being different thickness.mine was leaking on driveway on left side under the area of the coolant tank

Will have to try that, I was wondering why I have to top up the coolant constantly on a brand new car. I've had the issue since the second month.

Yeah hopefully that's what it is like mine it's a 2.0 tdi 14plate I bought it 6months ago and on way home from collecting it I had no coolant in it when I got home and I filled it and it just leaked it each day a small amount at a time until I changed the capp.

An update, my leak was finally identified as coming from the tank itself at the bottom. Now replaced and so far seems to be holding its contents!

A further update to anyone following this thread. I still had the leaks even after the tank was replaced. Went back to the garage and this time they claimed it was a faulty water pump and that it was separate to the leaking tank issue but somehow I didn't believe this. Anyway had it replaced and the cambelt too while they were at it and hopefully it's now fixed. This was with Arbury Seat Solihull if anyone is interested.

Hi hm227. Realise it's v old thread but hoping you can help.... I have had what sounds like same problem. Leaking resorvoir but gradual and when under duress. Reservoir replaced. Pump(s) replaced. Thought was fixed but found after a 300 mile round trip still leaking - full to empty. Was your issue fixed with new resorvoir or were there more problems? If more how did it finally get fixed? Cheers
