Coolant bottle top pipe hose size?

Hey folks!

When I was doing the various things on my car last weekend, I noticed the top coolant bottle pipe appears to have a split in it.

Im pretty sure it's an 'overflow' pipe, as coolant doesn't run through it from what i'd imagine.

It's the pipe that is pretty much right at the top of the bottle, almost in line with the cap.

I've noticed a few people have replaced that pipe with a sillicon hose, I just wondered what the correct hose size would be to replace it with? I'd imagine something like 12mm but I'd prefer to be sure :)

Any help appreciated!

Sean :)

Heheh I know I know! I do watch Eastenders... That could be classed as a bad soap opera!

What about this pipe;

I figure I might as well change that while im at it, another 8mm?

Hmmm... I replaced the top coolant hose on Saturday, admitedly lost a fair amount of coolant doing so but that was fair enough.

However the pipe is a LOT thicker than the standard piping, even though the internal is 8mm... It seems to grip on OK with 2 jubilees on there but I wonder if it was a bit too thick externally.

Saturday night, I pulled out the driveway, coolant temp on dash beeped at me, of course I realised id forgotten to top up what I lost when changing the pipes, so topped up and all fine.

But this morning driving to work, it beeped again, but then 2 seconds later went off... I guess i'll have to check if ;

a) the pipe leaks
b) coolant sensor a bit faulty (although this has been replaced once before so don't think it's that, i'll see if Vag com shows it).

The pipe size is fine mate, its made with more layers of silicone than the standard ones thats all.

Id check the water level again tbh, faulty temp sensor doesnt normally trigger the warning light unless its over heating

Thanks Phil, is that the short right angled black pipe coming off the metal pipe to the right of the bay in this pic?

A Forge TIP is going on next week also.

Myki / Benny> Thanks for the advice guys, I think it seems to be ok at the moment strangely enough! I drove it for about 30 mins last night and no light or anything, same this morning... Coolant level seems ok, probably 'just' on the limit so i'll top some more coolant fluid this weekend.

I did notice a pool of (water)? under the passenger side wheelarch/rear part of the front bumper yesterday at work, but didn't know if it was from my car or not, so I moved it back a bit at lunchtime to see if another pool developed, but thanks to the UK weather, it rained all afternoon so I couldn't tell lol.

did you happen to have the AC on for a while? That will cause condensation, which could mean some water collects under the car (although this should be very little)

plus not sure what temp it is in UK at the moment, as AC doesn't work under 4 degree celcius.

Myki > thanks mate - another project for the weekend :D

Reuvers> I've not used the AC the last couple of days, strangely enough there was another puddle (not a puddle as such, but more like a patch) underneath the front passenger side wheel arch/back of front bumper passenger side when I just looked a few mins ago...!

When it's in next week on the ramps, i'll check under the arch, maybe a pipes come loose...

the only thing thats really there is the coolant bottle.

remember though, that if you put too much in the container it will force itself out, so that could be it as well.

edit: 'it' being fluid lol
