Considering selling....

Hi Guys, im fairly new to this forum and i'm after a bit of advice!

I bought a Red R-plate, 16v Cupra Sport in July, however last month I moved house and am considering selling it. The big question is do I or dont I? Its a really nice car, however as ive discovered, moving into the big wide world im not sure if I can afford to run / maintain it as I should :( (Damn house prices & bills!) so am thinking of going down the TDI route.

If I was to sell it, what would you think its worth?

It is in great condition, has done 86,000 miles, is bog standard apart from a cat-back magnex exhaust- has the white Ronals etc on it The interior is mint, I use leather feed on the seats so they are not all dry and cracked. I gave it a full service when I bought it 4 months ago along with new discs & pads.

The only down side are the rear arches are slightly (and I mean slightly) starting to scab and it could do with a new pair of front tyres soon. Ive got a fair bit of History for it and it is Taxed til the end of Jan, Tested til June next year.

Ive cherished the car since ive owned it, but really not sure about keeping it now as i'd like to be able to live!

Any thoughts on what to do? If its to sell it, any offers or what do you think its worth? Heeeelp!

Cheers

Chris

for what it's worth (£1200 on a good day) you won't save much (if anything) by selling it & buying something slightly more economical.

You can drive a 16v carefully and get high 30's easily, and with the cost delta of petrol to diesel, you will get a similar cost per mile.

mine will easily do 40+ mpg

That is very true, i think the best consumption ive had is 41mpg on a run, so I appreciate that fuel consumption may not be that big a difference. However its things like Tax, insurance, spare / replacement parts that im worrying about.

I know that spares arent particularly expensive (I had a Nissan Sunny 2.0 GTI previously....that was expensive, thats if you could get hold of the bits!) but then when put in comparison with something like a cheap 306 TD (Yes I know its boring :( ) then that could be a fair few ££'s saved....

out of the frying pan & into the fire....

you "know" what's been changed on your car, buying a cheap 2nd hand car could mean you spend hundreds (or thousands) doing it all over.

I don't think there's a big cost difference all in all.

Parts arent too bad, you'll only get cheaper tax if you go below a 1.6, and there might not be a huge saving on insurance dependant on your age and no claims.

I'd find a possible new car, weigh up the savings based on that car and see if its worth it. Our 1.4 Ibiza costs exactly the same to run as the GTi.

ok just been working things out.
our Tdi's do around 54mpg at the cost of 1.08 per L. this works out at approx 9p per mile to run
if you can av. 40 mpg in your petrol, and at a cost of 93p per L. (that is what it is here) that works out to 10p per mile.
So the question is how many mile do you do? if not many you would be better to stay with the car you know but like us we run both cars and do approx 3k a month so we save approx £30 a month by running a TDi.

Now to mess things up Veggie :) I run 75% veggie at a cost of 83p per L. which means 30L of veggie and 10L of Diesel costs me £35.7 (where 40L of Diesel would be £43.2) which works out as 89p per L.
So with all that it costs me 7p per mile, which means a saving over petrol of £90 per month and £60 over streight diesel.

So the question again, how many mile do you do a month?

Hmm... like I said, petrol prices arent really too much of the issue, as I know average fuel consumption is faily similar (Unless you open the Ibiza up!) But just to answer the previous question i do on average about 700 miles a month.

With regards to ealier posts, im 22 with 4 years NCD and typical prices for Pug TD come in around £120 a year cheaper!

Like ive said, I dont particularly want to sell it but then if some decent money can be saved and it means the car can stay well maintained with somebody else who can easily afford to rather than myself who may not, then it'll make more sense to sell it :(

Has anybody else got any ideas what its worth? or is the £1200 mentioned above a good price?

I knew I should have stayed living with parents......!

Thanks for all your input so far :)

£1200 is about what you can expect for it at the minute, maybe a touch more. Bad arches won't help, something I will have to deal with when I come to part with mine.

I will try and get a few pics up next week when I can. The arches arent that bad, small bubbles and thats it. After reading on here, I stripped all the arch guards out of it when I bought it and cleared all the crud out of them.

It has also got a Cat-1 alarm & Immobiliser with anti-hijack etc which is an added bonus!

40+ MPG? I wish, the most I have ever seen on my MFA is 34 and that is driving at 58 mph.

Have you worked out 40+ mpg with the MFA or doing it the old fasion way with a calculator?

you wont save much with the pug 306 td, some but doubtfull if it would be worth it in the end, i do have to admit that while i love the 306d turbos, the ibiza is a far more reliable motor and much easier to work on aswell

I've seen crazy good mpg after long motorway jaunts with stretches of average speed cameras at 50mph.

Think 44mpg is my very best
If you wanted to keep it you know you could drive it grandma style, stay off cam and still work out cheap
