Coilpack Issue For Newbie

Guys

I am a complete newbie to this site.

I am in the process of purchasing a late 02 LC turbo. The only reason i have managed to buy this is by telling the future wife that it wont break down on me as often as the golf gti has done recently. So i need to be fully prepared for the coilpack issue.

Everything else on the car i have checked over but if the coilpack goes i want to have spares in the boot and be able to fix.

So my question is ........................ what the hell is a coilpack fault????

How will i know it has hapepend to me?

Where do i get hold of replacements?

How easy is it to fit on the side of a motorway?

Your help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Do a search mate,

The coil pack is a VAG, and Renault use them as well, part use in the ignition sequence. You'll know when one has failed as the car will fire on 3 cylinders and engine management light will flash.

To change depending on year will be under warrenty - the AA should carry them as a spare but I've had various experience with them - cost is about 23quid and to change cylinders 1 and 2 is fairly simple - engine cover off then they pop up and disconnect then re-fit - 3 and 4 takes a little more doing as various things cover the cylinders.

Hope that helps.

I had 3 separate coil pack failures whilst the car was under warranty, resulting in calls to the AA. They were not carrying the Seat coilpacks on any of those occasions. So probably best to carry a spare with you.

I had several problems with my R - 1st AA van had a spare so done on the roadside, 2nd had not but took me to a VW garage to buy one then back to my car, upto me to claim back from Seat UK that time which took 5 months, 3rd time AA had a jobsworth who refused to change it on the road and got my car taken to a garage for the change - not impressed as the muppet wasted my morning when I had a meeting to attend some 150 miles away!

Also look for the designation on the packs - I posted the letters of the new and old parts in another thread so just do a search and then you can check which ones you have on your car.

Known fault by the Vag group but too costly to recall every car as this affect most engines across the whole range.

When one of the coils went on my 2001 Leon Cupra T, the only VW coils the AA guy wasn't carrying were, guess which ones, that's right - mine! But they towed me to my regular dealer and they replaced them all for free in the end.

RAC don't always carry them. I always carry a spare but you can only change cyls 1-3 without tools. If cyl 4 goes you'll need a spanner.

You'll always need a little screwdriver to pull the tab back.

I get my spares on e-bay, but don't go bidding against me!

Sorry to dig up another old thread.

But one of my coil packs kicked the bucket on Friday, but was replaced for free by the RAC chap. Twice infact, as the spare he had died about 20 seconds after driving off! But anyway, I wanted to order a new one off VAG parts but wanted to make sure I get the right one. Is it the MK4 golf one I'm after?

Thanks
