Coil packs/Ignition problems

Hello,

Last week I had a coil pack go completely, it happened suddenly with no previous misfires or warning.

The garage I used said that they only needed to change the affected coil pack and this they did (cylinder 1). From reading this forum I fully expected the others to go shortly, the garage laughed when I turned up with three new coil packs that I purchased from the local VW dealer.

I got in the car, started it and noticed the warning light was still on so asked the mechanic to come out and clear the fault code, all was OK and I would just swap the remaining three coil packs when I got home.

Whilst we were talking the car was idling and then suddenly started mis-firing, coil pack number 4 had failed at the garage, they didn't think I was so silly buying the other coil packs then!

Anyway, all the coil packs were changed and no warning light, a day later the warning light is on and I have the following fault code:

17760 P1355 Cylinder 1 Ignition Circuit Open, static - no indication on display.

Does anyone know what this means? The new coil pack on cylinder 1 was supplied by the independent garage, the others came from VW, is the cylinder 1 coil pack faulty?

The car is an lcr btw.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Matthew.

I have just swapped the cylinder 1 coil pack for a genuine vag one, the fault is cured.

The garage that supplied me with the cheap nasty immitation will get it back in the morning, although when I say cheap it was actually more expensive than the real thing from VW!

Thanks for the help.

I've have been waiting for this to happen. I have only had the car a couple of months and haven't really driven it much.

I had the cooling fans replaced under warranty during the first month, they failed with the slow speed problem.

I could probably have had this done under warranty but SEAT said I needed to take the car back with the failed coil pack in it before they would change it under warranty - I really couldn't be bothered to drive 30 miles, swap the coil packs in their car park and then swap them back to go home and then have to go back to have them replaced - they didn't have them in stock as they say its a rarity that they go wrong, funnily enough they said the same with the fans!

I am trying not to over react though, the car is great and maybe it will be OK for a while now.

I have a quick question related to this thread...

When a coil pack eventually gives up the ghost it shows a fault code..
However, if its on its way out, this may not happen till it actually dies...
How could you then tell which coil plug is giving you problems..

Is there a way to test each one without relying on vagcom?

generally when the coil pack misfires it registers on vag.com.... but while its gonna fail i don't know how you measure that at all....

i changed 1 and 2 and still have 3 and 4 to change yet...got the 2 brand spankers from audi in my glove box and gonne keep my 3 old ones are spare in the car!

Hello all,

My mate has just told me he has a missfire on this Leon Cupra a sort of stuttering at around 30mph ... he didn't say which gear in or whether it happens at certain RPM. He said it almost feels like the car is going to cut out.

Does this point towards coil packs? I told him it might be that. He said he took the spark plugs out, cleaned them and it was better for a day but now it's back and getting worse. He says no engine check light has come on.

Thanks for any helP!

Cheers

Nick

Coil pack one went about six months ago, took it to garage had it and plugs replaced. earlier this week same fault, fault light on and engine chugging. Took it back and they replaced the coil pack and plugs again. However the fault is still there misfiring and sounding more like a Massey-Ferguson. The garage have said it might be a valve and asked me to get a second opinion. Any ideas???
