Coil Pack Problem fixes itself?!

Hey folks,

So I was driving home from work yesterday and noticed the engine fault light was on...

It was idling a bit funny, sorta rev-hunting when I was stopped at a junction etc

Vag Com shown it as being misfire on cylinder 2 etc too lean etc!

So im thinking it's a classic coil pack problem...

Im all ready to go replace it tommorow, but tonight, all of a sudden the light has dissapeared!?
I turned the car off, and on again to see if it came back, but it didn't...

Should I still replace it anyway!?

Seems a bit strange?

it's most likely that it was only a slight missfire under load and it aint uncommon for the light to go out by itself when this happens. but the fault code still exists unless you clear it. only way you'd know is if you went out and was pushing the car abit to see if the light comes back.

sometimes people find the light flashes until you slow down

unfortunately its a sign of things to come, however with this symptom, it could just as likely be a duff spark plug

mines done this before, pulled up at a junction and was only running on 3cylinders, scary thing is though, the 4th cylinder just fired back up and started running normal again after about 10secs :wtf:
and whats even weirder is i didnt get ANY codes at all ???
coil hadnt popped out or nothing

i just keep my beedy little eyes on them now

Chage it mate! just had the same problem on my mates LCR, It started to judder at about 3000 rpm was like this for a couple of days and didnt throw up a fault code, Eventully it was bad enough for the EML light to come on this is when it throw up the code. And that also was misfireing on cylinder 1.

It would have been a intermittent fault mate, The light doesnt come onfor no reason, bound to come back sooner or later. If you have vag-com hook it up and it should tell you what coil pack has failed in what cylinder.

Hey dude, i'll check it out later on on there, I bought a coil pack just in case, if it still says Cylinder 2, ill change that coil and take it from there.

Hopefully it won't be the spark plug!

The strange thing is, my car is running fine! Last time my coil went it was running terrible etc, and barely driveable!

This time, it seems fine!

Typical isnt it, the lights back on now, a month later, after magically turning off the day I bought the coil pack.

I decided to have it vag-commed and turns out it just said "Fuel System too lean"

I remember the coil pack and thought i'd just change cylinder 2 anyway, as I had bought it over a month ago and not used it.

Turns out it's the wrong one lol, got it from ECP, have to take it back and get another one now!

All their part numbers are wrong for coil packs, I had this problem with a Golf MK4 as well... They seem to sell the wrong coils for them!

it took my coilpack about 4 months to go in the end, and the light would stay off for anything up to 2 weeks, stay on for one day and then go off again, the damage done to the pack is internal, the core cracks up etc... so the plugs will be fine and the pack can look fine to.

pain in the arse cause it had me guessing for a while Lol!

(this was on a none-chaved VTS)

Hey guys,

Yea, I changed a coil pack when I first bought the car, but the garage (SEAT) didn't change all 4, just the one! I don't know which one either! (Typical!)

Anyway, it turns out the Coil pack I bought from ECP was for a Cupra, but say a 2000 model, as my friend (Pulsebass on here) has a X reg Cupra, and the coil is the same as his, a bolt in type.

However mine use a push in type, so i'll change cylinder 2's coil pack on Monday, and within the next couple of weeks, buy another 3 and replace all of them just to eliminate anything.

sounds like a totally different set up to my VTS as the coil pack used to come as one unit that sat on top of all 4 cylinders and not seprate ones. Lol! thats the french for you though!!!!!

LOL! Probably better though mate, at least then you'd only have to change the one whole unit, instead of 4 individual ones :(

Although, to be fair, it's super simple to change them on the Cupra so I shouldn't grumble!

just a quick question about these, just rang gsf, told them what i wanted, and he said just check to see if they work, as bolt down coilpacks only have 3 pins where as my pencil ones have 4, is this ok??
