Hi one and all,

Bought a Leon Reference Sport 2.0 TDI with a 196BHP remap with 325nm torque (was 140BHP) and it hasn't had a clutch upgrade, my local specialist says I need a new clutch and that a good one is about £700 as the clutch could go and mess up the flywheel and cost me thousands.

The previous owner thinks the current clutch is good for 250BHP what's your lots experience on this. Have most of you got upgrades or stayed standard the last thing I want is a huge bill for either but if a clutch is needed I'd rather that than thousands....

you can get good clutches for less than that but depends if that price includes clutch cover plate aswell.

If it does eat the flywheel it will prob work out just over a grand. Although im not that clued up on the deisel side of things.
 
Its the torque that kills the clutch, is the clutch having problems now? Any clutch slip?

If not then it should be ok providing you do not give it too much beans under 2.5k rpm. After that the torque drops and the clutch should handle it....another words drop it a cog or two.

That kept me ok in my Ibiza FR TDi remapped to 176bhp and 300lbft torque.

Also...

From what I remember (having owned a TDi 140) it wont remap to over 180bhp without DPF removal....

Thats a good map for a 140 mine was 189/322 stage 1, who did yours?

Also i do have the occasional clutch slip on mine and it slips from 2500-3000 revs, but saying that its not really done it for about 2 months now. It just does it now and then.

140TDI does not have DPF!!!!!
 
I may have my calculation wrong but doesn't 325nm convert to about 239 lbs/ft of Torque??
The PD140 out of the box according to Seat should be 140 bhp and 236 lbs/ft, the standard clutch should be good up to about 350 lbs/ft of torque but its really depends on how the car was treated before you got it and pot luck on how well it was screwed together that day.
My car is currently running on 190 bhp and 350 lbs/ft and I have not suffered any clutch slippage at all. Again that might be pot luck but I don't give it full beans anyways till 2.5K.

Thanks guys and gals good advice all around. I will take it on board. I emailed AMD Technics who did the stage 1 and 2 remap and they said about the same. Treat it nicely and it'll be fine.

my clutch slipped before xmas, but hasn't done it since, although today when turning of the ignition the car made a real loud ticking noise. could this be related to the clutch slipping before xmas?? the clutch feels fine. im affraid to drive the car incase i have done alot of damage our cause alot more damage. any advice? cheers

The standard clutch is good for a bit over 310 Ib/ft. Some will say it'll handle upto 350 Ib/ft. Unless you've been driving the car like you stole it most of the time your clutch should be fine. However, if you are concerned then by all means take it to a trusted specialist to put the mind at rest.
When i say trust, you know i mean a garage that won't say you need a new clutch set up, just so that they can make some money off you :)

Clutches don't tend to make ticking noises and I can't think of any reason for a clutch to tick with the engine off as nothing will be rotating.

Ticking noises after the engine is switched off is normally the sound of the exhaust shrinking as it cools down, taking into consideration that it expands when it's hot.
