clutch too light plus smelling sweet

i've tried searching but found nothing i have a 1.4 tsi and i feel that the clutch is too light probably because this is the first petrol i've ever driven is there an easy way to make it feel a little better also when holding the car on the clutch eg when in traffic its constantly trying to stall so i either have to burn the clutch or knock it out of gear! and for some reason when reversing eg up a road with my foot off the clutch the smell of clutch is terrible!

oh and the car is 5 months old with 2k on the clock and has been like it from new i'm probably going to book it in soon, i previously put it down to bedding in but its getting stupid now.

any ideas or this the same for all 1.4's?

You should never hold the car on the clutch. If you have been doing that, that's why it stinks.

BTW the clutch will not be covered by the warranty as it's a wear and tare item. It's going to cost about £500 for a new one to be fitted. I suggest you take it easy on the what's left of your poor clutch.

so how do you creep along in traffic then? and even if the clutch had been ridern like an old man it still shouldn't be scrapped after 2000 miles! plus that still doesn't explain why it's always had slipping since new?

The clutch in 1.4tsi's are very light, thats how it is! The same in my 1.2tsi, everyone that sits in my car is amazed at how light it is.
I'll assume i have the same clutch type as you, and mine doesn't stink! So either theres a fault with it, or your doing something wrong. Reading what you put about holding the car on the clutch, you aren't meant to do that! I know what you mean about creeping along in traffic, every morning i que through Yarm for about 20mins in stop start traffic. Pull the clutch up a bit, dip it, and let it roll, thats that i do! I can't imagine the clutch slipping from new, as all cars are tested before they're delivered to you, if it was slipping then it would have been fixed and not delivered to you! If its slipping now i guess it's something you've done to it..

First gear, clutch fully up will take you all the way down to about 3MPH before you stall. After that you stop and start.

Methinks you have fooked your clutch up through noobie driving. Don't blame the car for that.

It's very quick and easy to bugger a clutch, pull away in second about 200 times and that will be it finished, hold the car on a hill at traffic lights 20-30 times and that will do it. Or just drive it how you do..............................................

Its easy to bugger a clutch and won't take long either.
A friend of mine works at vw dealer and they changed an old dears clutch twice in as many months on a polo!

ok so when i say holding the car on the clutch i mean for about 1 second max to put the handbrake on/off while in traffic on a hill. not sat there for 3 mins at the traffic lights.

and i drive around 50000 miles a year in other cars plus vans and ive never had any problems nor ever had to replace a clutch.

so thanks for the abuse!

I do about 50k a year too. :D

I find it hard to believe that with all that mileage a year you've never driven a petrol before ????

There is a big difference between driving a petrol and a diesel. It's not impossible that you have a faulty clutch on the only petrol you have ever driven but more likely that you're not using it correctly.

Sorry.

yeah it's far easier to get a diesel into gear using only the cluth, whereas a petrol it is very difficult, and really, shouldn't be done. Maybe that's where your problem lies?
