Telford ay it...
My clutch is now at the end of the road, pulling away and changing gears quickly is getting difficult :(

The question to fellow gti owners is.........Have you had your clutch and cable changed? and how much was it?? Need to get a rough price in my head so i can cry over it.

Cheers :D

clutch cable is very easy to do (I was amazed how easy to DIY) and is about £50

GSF suggest £71.50 for the clutch, plus vat - and I would expect it to be done in 3-4hrs max at your garages favourite rate. plus about £50 in gearbox oil

or, get some mates round, and DIY it, spend some money on the right tools & have fun.

It was the 1st 'big' job I did, and it was pretty straight forward, only stumbling on lifting the thing back in - I couldn't do it on my own

There's no F in Quality..
I paid £170 to have the clutch changed on my 1.6 Cordy (same 020 box as yours)

Going to DIY the gearbox change on Em's 1.4 and fit a new clutch and clutch cable while I'm at it, along with driveshafts, wishbones, front hubs and 256mm brakes !!! SHold keep me busy for a weekend !!!! lol ;)

yo.. if it was mine of course id do it :D.. but having never done one on a SEAT or VW ( as easy as it may turn out to be ) id rather not use your car as practise id feel really bad if i wrecked it lol ... get a BMW then we talk haha

My mechanic mate did mine on my 16v and it took 10 hours! I assisted.

It was nearly all done and then the clutch arm fell out of place... So we had to get the box back out, and it proved unbelievabley difficult to get it out the second time- we had to take the flanges off the box to get it off! So, naturally, there was gearbox oil everywhere and it took bloody ages.

Hardest 100 quid he'd ever earnt!

£100 parts tops, but time wasted getting annoyed with it = priceless! HAHA

seriously though gearboxes can be easy with the right tools and some idea of whats meant to happen, but going in blind = not worth the bother for a couple of hundred squid

I really enjoyed doing mine, I felt like I'd got one over the 'professionals' for the 1st time

couple of years later & I did an engine swap in a day

Im all for the idea of attacking this myself, with andys help of course. Just hoping nothing horrible happens.

Some time in the very near future ill be getting my project, with plans of engine changes etc. so this will be a nice start. And as m0rk said, its nice to do things yourself :)
