Climate Control Takes a Dive

Yesterday, 27'c temperature and the climate control takes a dive. I started the car up, took instructions on the phone whether to go to Borders, the fan was running on full belt, then nothing, the display showed, on, full running but no air coming through.

Fiddled with the controls, they changed Ok, except nothing happened. Restarted, still dead. Headed back to mother's and took the manual in to read about the fuse box. Went back to the car, tried again, still dead. Pulled out the 40w fuse which I reckoned would be the motor / compressor one, had not blown, put it back in. There are two or so other fuses connected with the climate control. Re-tried it and it was now working and has continued too.

What do we reckon, pulling out the fuse cleared the electronics that may have been confused ?. Loose fuse ?. It just cleared the problem itself?.

I tend to think it rebooted itself when I pulled to heavy duty fuse out.

You are probably right the taking out the fuse rebooted the system. However for future reference the following will reset the system. Press the “ECON” - key and the key for “air flow into the passenger compartment at face level” (the smaller button in the midlle) at the same time. The display will show a mass of symbols for a few seconds coupled with some sounds from the system as it resets. This "should" clear any computer glitches with the system!

Hi,

thought, I had it already posted here somewhere ... but must have been at the other UK-forum (thread title was "Clicking away..." or some such)

This reset helps as well to get rid of the annoying ticking behind the dash, provoked by incorrect positioning of the climate servos ... (at least for several users affected and for quite a long time ... if not for good)

It's only worth trying if your 5P is built up to beginning/middle of my2006 ... later models should have a corrected servomotor control, which lead SEAT/supplier to the conclusion, the (undocumented) manual reset is'n necessary any more.

Well ... hope your climate control always works as expected, otherwise ...

Thanks Klawit.... hopefully it won't happen again.... I wondered whether with it running on full pelt whether it had overloaded and then got confused.

Useful image :).... I'll put these in the back of the manual, least I found whether the fuses were and the ODB or whatever it's called.

Is this the same noise that sounds like a tock tock tock, similar to the indicator sound? I get this about a mile after leaving home in the morning only. I thought it was my key fob for ages, but realised it was not when it did it stationary once.

I'll be pleased if this fixes it. But the question is why does a reset fix it?

You can easily find out by turning the climate off next time for the first 2 miles of travel ... the tocking noise should not come up.

Ok, it's more or less a temporary fix, as it might come back after a while ... mine is more or less quiet now for more than a year ... sure you still hear the servos every now and then opening or closing the vent flaps ... but no more knocking from the dashboard.

saying, that this advice it's taken from a german car mag, where a GolfV owner complained about the ticking in the climate ... and we learned from the article, that the servomotors, already positioned up to the stop, get powered again and start knocking ... the climate-reset will then realign the servomotors, so that they kinda learn their endposition again.

btw ... this is not the exact translation, as they put it more amateurish ;)

Hope this is explanation enough ... as I can't help any further.

Thanks Klaus,

I did the reset last night, and no noise this morning. Although it does not do it every day, so switching it off to test would not be proof, so time will tell.

If I only have to reset once a year then I will be happy. ;-)

Funny enough I started this thread and after three years I might have got down to the bottom of the problem with the aircon cutting out in both hot and cold whether. Examination of the said fuse at the weekend showed melted plastic, bent pins and grubby contacts. The bent pins were where it had heated up and the plastic contorted.

I think there were just poor contacts, so I replaced it with one out of a packet for £1-10 at the weekend and it's been working wonderful since - it had got to the state where it had stopped working. My last repair was £1,200 for a new ABS so got off lightly sorting it out myself.

Hi all

I dont suppose you have a comment on my climate control..

it tap tap tap all the times as if trying to zero one of the blowers..
I have had the glove box out, and all gears rotate as buttons pressed.. and cant see anything..
feet in winter stay cold, as in summer above 11c it suddenlt stop messing around and nice cold air.. and all happy..

also in winter sometimes car once fully warmed up thinks its got to make car very warm...
it is fine and done 20k like it but its a pain.. so end up with window cracked open in winter to vent some of warm air.. and thats wheather I turn temp down, and even iff set to off.. vents still have hot air comeing out..

wow... I thought I had only one that did this.. mine also tick tocs when i accelerate or sometimes when i corner it makes air blow different..
servo noise is a pain.. so will see if reset helps.. I was thinking that a gear had stripped in one of blowers so it was waggling around and servos were trying all ther time to reset back to home???

My clicking is pretty much constant at the moment. I have tried the ECON reset thing but it does not seem to work. My Altea is a late 2006 model. Is there another way to reset the servo?

Hiya, I've got a 56 plate leon, same issue I think, get the tocking noise and also whenever I really need cold air the motors seem to shut the vents, I can hear air flow but nothing comes out. If if hot Eco air blasts out again. Really frustrating, sadly the reset operation noted has no effect on my car. Out of interest which fuse did you pull?, the manual for the under bonnet fuses is no help and even the interior fuse panel wasn't where the manual said.

Pulled 22 fan but doubt that's it as it's the actual controller I want to reset. Cheers

Its the compressor heavy duty fuse I pull out in the Altea so using the Leon manual I would expect you to find the similar. Its under the steering wheel in the Altea and the fuse is the first one inserted top left, not the blanks. Currently on the way home from the Czech Republic and the top days of 30 / 31'c triggered the issue again. My theory is the load on the electronics of the A/C unit is too high when the fan is running full out and in the winter icey start up, battery may not always have enough current to support the electronics. At both extremes I have the issue.

Solution ignition off, fuse pulled to not make contact, two seconds back in, turn ignition but don't start, fan will be running again. From this holiday I have learnt a new trick to moderate the issue occurring in the heat. When you get in the car on those 30'c days, tell the air con you need 28'c to stop the fan going full out, then gradually reduce the temperature but don't go above four bars on fan speed. This works, still I could always fork out to the garage but I haven't for the last getting on for ten years of having the car.

The cold weather solution is to ease off on using the blower until the charge is better and have a good quality battery so the air con electronics don't malfunction.

I hope it helps but then again this may not be your issue.

Hmmm well I don't hear anything running with my issue so its not closed vents but shutdown.

Thanks fella, I thinky problem is slightly different a what happed with mine is the fan still runs but the vents shut off. Really annoying especially in hot weather. Might get a diagnostic done to see if it's a simple issue like a sensor.
