Climate control Mod...

Hi guys, first post here, sorry if i am approaching a subject already covered!

I have a Leon S 1.6 16v (2001) and at present it has your bog standard twisty, turnee controls for the heater/Air Con....

I would like to remove this and fit a climate control unit and was wondering if this is just a straight swap as i am hoping it would be, or am i looking at the usual nightmare of wiring etc...

Any info would be fantastic...

Andy

Doubt it would be a straight swap... the climate has sensors for the internal temperature that it uses to know how to add heat/cold to maintain the set temp etc.... you don't have them with the normal twisty dials....

someone else may know more though!

just curious really as i am possibly getting a hold of an entire centre console (everything from the cup holder down to the ashtray) and this is where the donor climate control unit would be from... looking at the unit itself some small vents can be seen just above the LCD, i thought these may be integral sensor to the unit???

cheers

AFAIK it will be pretty hard as there are more than just the one sensor. I know that people have suggested this on the mk3/4 golf but that it was going to be way too much work

I imagine it to be reasonably generic, as its not until the final stages of production that seat decide if one car is going to be an S, SE, SX etc... this is all that is spurring me on thinking that any wiring must be standard...

as far as fitting, i assume that i would just have to remove the stereo to access the bolts to remove the twisty dial panel (wish i asked this ages ago as the light behind this blew 3 years ago... lol)

cheers

The manual controls have Bowden cables to the recirc/outside air, air direction (demist, top/bottom vents etc) and hot/cold air mixing flaps, which are replaced by servomotors for Climate Control. I don't know if the standard wiring loom has the power and position sensor connections for these.

The fan blower speed is also electronically controlled, replacing the switch and resistor pack from the manual dial controls.

There are also several temperature sensors and a photosensor. Not impossible to do, but hard work to retrofit. Certainly the control unit on its own is not enough.

The small vents above the control unit lead via a pipe to the dashboard-level temperature sensor, which has a small fan to pull air over it from the dash.

appologies but i am having a little trouble understanding all the sensors info.... bowden cables, sure no worries... but anything electrical???? i assume the servo motors will be next to if not part of the C/C unit?

has this ever been done in the past???

cheers again guys

The servomotors are mounted right next to the flaps they control, on the air trunking. Completely separate from the Climate Control unit mounted in the dash.

Four servos: temperature control (flap mixing hot and cold air, needs proportional control), recirculation/outside air (on/off), footwell vent/deicing (on/off, directs all the footwell air up to the screen for deicing) and central dash vents. I think you already have the recirc servo, as that's a pushbutton control under the manual dials, isn't it?

Temp sensors at footwell level, in the dash and on the top of the dash, as well as one in the outside air inlet trunk. Also a photosensor on top of the dash to detect sunlight on the screen and adjust cooling to suit.

Separate electronic control unit for the air blower fan, mounted next to the fan motor.

Don't know of anybody who's done this before.

just for a bit of closure, i was in the Seat dealer yesterday and posed the question to one of the mechanic's...

In short... Yes, it can be done... but it involves a lot of re-wiring, different type of heater box and sensors/servo's as mentioned in previous posts... all in all... it would cost over £1000...

so i need to think of something else to do now... lol...
