Climate Control Issues - Anyone with EKTA?

Argh

I need some help with this!

My climate control is blowing the air "on and off" at me at the moment. One second it's fine, blowing the air, and then it disapears, off, and then back again.

It can continue like this for a while until it seems to sort itself out and then blows normally. At the same time as these problems, the flap that seems to be located in the passenger footwell is "adjusting" (read - groaning) until its sorted.

Is there anything I can do? VAGCOM or otherwise?

I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and pull things apart :)

Thanks!

If it's set to auto the flap will move about and the fan speed will go up and down.

Set it to manual and if it still does it you have a fault...... or 2

^^ As above... that's sort of exactly what climate "control" is meant to do - if set to auto it's trying to keep the same temp you've sat it at by blowing harder/softer when needed.

As also mentioned - a common prob on some Mk3's was the blowers would sometimes do what they wanted :D

Nope it's set to manual, it happens when it's been left for a while and then started up, the flap in the passenger footwell constantly adjusts itself until it gets "happy" when it behaves normally, in auto or manual mode.

It's deff a problem, not climate control doing it's job.

Stupid heap of ****, it's just ahd a new dashbaord becuase SEAT can't made an immobilizer that lasts thelife of the car, needs a CV boot and a set of pads and now this. Never ever buying a SEAT again. Roll on new Alfa.

My wife's Polo 9N has being doing this for about a year (I think) - with no faults being logged. If you have VAG-COM or VCDS then try doing baisc settings within A/C - that will allow the flap motors to "re-calibrate" and find their electical end stops. My wife's A/C also normally kept in MANUAL and ECO is normally "quite busy" and it has not always been like that (had car from new). My Passat B5 was showing a U/S temperature flap motor, but that seems to have temporily sorted itself (after I bought a new £100 motor) but I'm sure its problem will return. All these flap motors have a potentiometer mounted on the actuating rod so that the system gets told where the flap is position wise, what I think happens is that either that potentiometer gets a worn segment of track - then its totally U/S or segments of track or the wiper gets dirty. When I first VCDS'd my temperature flap in the Passat, the potentimeter O/P just wandered up and down for normal temperatures - but worked okay for HI and LO. I carried out basic settings and that did not fix it, so I just left it at LO for a few weeks - then raised the temperature a bit and it still works okay, a few days ago I cleared the logged flap fault codes and it stayed clear!??!

Final thought, maybe if you not do have VAG-COM or VCDS, exorcise the flap motors quite a lot of times and that might just clean up the potentiometer tracks - nothing to lose!

Thanks mate, that makes sence. I'll try excersising the flap that I'm 99% sure is at fault (the one that decided if air comes in for the outside or the inside  )

Attacked it with a fresh mind this morning.

Firstly hooked up VAGCOM to try and find the fault.

Cleared the Auto HVAC section of 4 (!!!) codes, flicked ignition a few times and used the climate for a bit and ended up with this:

VAGCOM_Air_Flap.jpg

Then I dismatled as much as possible on the pasenger size - the source of the noise and excersised all the flaps using the buttons on the climate control.

Found out that this one was the culprit - constantly adjusting then coming to a rest on a pretty much random cycle:

Bottom circle is the arm that controls the "flap", top is the electrical connector going to the motor which is semi - visable between the two circles.

It's the flap that controls if the air comes in from the outside or the inside (when recirc button is pressed). I only have the shareware version of VAGCOM and refuse to buy it for a single use so I'm going to have to find someone that can do this very local to me to try nd reset the flaps which i've seen can be done before.

If this doesn't cure the problem, I am going to try and either unplug the flap when I'm happy of it's position (hope this doesn't flag up a fault that causes the screen to flash!?!?) - if it does I could probably solder a resistor in there to trick the climate into thinking that the motor is there - and leave it at that (I never use the recirc anyway) or try and change the motor/flap to a new one.

I have noticed a little pattern to it - when you start it up first thing in the morning or after it has been left a while it goes through this annoying motion. Once I had left it to groan and settle, it wouldn't do it when I was playing apart from the odd time when I pressed the re-circ button. Leave it again overnight/few hours and it does the groaning sequence all over again and the settles, the same pattern.

Any ideas from anyone?

Probably on the Ibiza's pathetic excuse for an "interior comfort" system - yeah right, climate control that doesn't work and pot luck if the car starts! Oh and the locks that allow the keys to be locked in the car? Fantastic car IMO [:@]

Plan of action is:

1) Get the flap positions reset by someone with VAGCOM (help anyone local?!?)
If that fails
2) Try and replace it!

I'm going to try and get an expolded diagram of the motor/flap and see what can be done!

I think that you will find that there are four screws securing these motors - I've bought a temperature selecting one for my Passat - and they seem all to be roughly the same made by Bosch - there will be a slot or shape on the motor end to slot into the flap axle. So reaching the four securing screws is the only big "must"!
