Hi there,

I know this has been discussed on some other threads but could not find a proper throttle body cleaning guide etc.

I want to clean my throttle body and was wandering what was really involved if I decided to take the whole throttle body off and cleaned it, I take it I would need to buy a new gasket?

How difficult would it be to do this and rough cost of a gasket, cant imagine it being that much.

If cleaning it on the car I take it I just take the black hose off and spray in some throttle body cleaner or carb cleaner.

I have enclosed a pic of what I think is the throttle body? any help or if anyone knows where there is a guide on this, thanks

yes mate, that is the TB.
From what i've heard, you will be best to fit a new gasket as the old one is easily damaged on removal. No idea on price, but gotta be pennies really.

When i did mine, i cheated - i just took the hose off and sprayed some stuff in there (cant remember what now..) - and did a tb realignment in vag-com (or whichever method you choose) and it helped.

Hopefully someone else with knowledge can help ya tho.

cheers pabs,

been reading on the net about cleaning throttle bodies etc, some say not to use anything on the throttle body as it has a coating on the throttle body that prevents build up, unsure if this is a permanent layer, also not specific to the leon what I was reading?

I would like to do a full clean if I can (dependant on the risk involved i.e. if I could fcuk up anything by doing it)

......if not ill have to do the quick way, but im not coninved by this and only think it will be a quick fix.

also if anybody knows of a good air intake TB cleaner that is not too harsh would be good, had a look on the tinternet but could not really find much, thanks

looks like nobody has done a full throttle body clean/removal, might have to learn as I go, just wanted some tips or know if anyone had done this.

i'd go with pab's idea - it's only to remove localised dirt rather than totally cleanse it

however - if you do remove it, you will want to replace the gasket, which as suggested will be cheap enough (it's only paper)

I'd probably clean it with something that will evapourate like wd40

I did mine last weekend. I took the whole thing off and cleaned it (although there wasn't much in it tbh) with carb cleaner, making sure it was dry again before I put it back on.

Not suprisingly the local parts place didn't have a gasket so I had to cut a new one from a sheet of gasket paper, which was about 80p.

you can just take the jubilee clip of the hose and spray it inside the TB, you will see all the crap come back down the Tb when you spray it in so have a rag to hand, I was gonna take the whole thing off and clean it but went for the quick option.

Might do a full cleaner later.

I am also having issues with the idling. Quick (and most likely very stupid)question, in the photo above, is the Throttle body the Silver metal casing just above the dipstick? If it is, can I just spray in the cleaner and leave it to dry?

I just cleaned the edges of the throttle plate, this is where a lot of the shi build up causing disrupted flow. Seem keener now.

i cleaned mine out with brake cleaner and scrubbed it with a tooth brush, you would need to basic set it with vag com tho if u take it off completely, should idle better
